Premier League executives take explosive action after watching Man City humiliating Liverpool

Manchester City’s ruthless 3-0 dismantling of Liverpool at Anfield on Sunday did nothing to ease tensions at the top of English football. According to reports, Premier League executives exchanged messages during the match about the prospect of handing City an unprecedented interim punishment. It’s a move that would rank among the most controversial in the competition’s history.

City, who have been found guilty of almost all of their 115 charges relating to financial wrongdoing, strolled to a sixth straight victory. Goals from Erling Haaland, Jeremy Doku and Rayan Cherki put Liverpool to the sword before Ryan Gravenberch’s second-half red card compounded the hosts’ misery.

It was City’s first competitive outing since the guilty verdict was confirmed, and the manner of the win — against a title rival reduced to ten men — appears to have unsettled some of those tasked with deciding the club’s fate.

According to The Independent’s Miguel Delaney, several Premier League executives were so alarmed by what they were watching that they messaged one another during the game to discuss the possibility of expelling City from the competition with immediate effect.

Under Rule B6 of the Premier League’s rulebook, a member club can be expelled if at least 15 of the other clubs vote in favour of expulsion via a Special Resolution.

Appeal process likely to delay any sanction

For all the boardroom anxiety, City are unlikely to face any punishment in the immediate future. The club lodged an appeal against the commission’s verdict, which found them guilty of serious breaches of both Premier League and UEFA financial rules spanning nine seasons.

That appeal must be heard within 12 weeks and across a block of five days, with a separate sanctions hearing — to be overseen by the same three-person independent panel — still to be scheduled.

Crucially, City retain the right to challenge any sanction handed down, potentially dragging the process on further still. Should the sanctions committee ultimately rule against the club, City could escalate the matter all the way to the High Court, a route the Premier League will be desperate to avoid given the scrutiny already surrounding the case.

For now, City insist they are innocent and have pointed to what they describe as “irrefutable evidence” to support their position. This leaves the Premier League with little option but to let the legal process play out, however much urgency some executives privately feel.

Maresca unmoved by the noise

Head coach Enzo Maresca, whose side have now won six in a row across all competitions, made clear after the match at Anfield that the swirling uncertainty off the pitch would not be allowed to affect his players.

Asked whether the case needed resolving quickly so City could be sure any trophies won this season would stand, Maresca was unequivocal.

“I don’t care. I’m here to try and prepare games, and to win games. Hopefully I can speak about this situation when we win the appeal,” he said.

It was a typically pointed response from a coach who has repeatedly batted away questions on the subject since the guilty verdict landed, preferring instead to let his team’s form do the talking.

City sit well placed in the Premier League table and remain firmly in the title conversation, a reality that only sharpens the dilemma facing the league’s leadership.

They either act decisively now and risk a legal and political storm, or allow the established appeals process to run its course while City continue to win.
