Barcelona ready to cash in on Ferran Torres to dodge Man City add-on

- Sale would spare Blaugrana further payments to Etihad after 2022 deal
- Torres exit would leave Barca searching for fresh firepower up front
Barcelona are willing to sell Ferran Torres this summer rather than trigger a further payment owed to his former club, Manchester City, according to reports.
The Spain international joined Barcelona from City in January 2022 for an initial fee of €55m, with a further €10m in potential add-ons attached to the deal.
Those add-ons have since been paid in full, but a separate clause means Barcelona would owe City an additional €8m if Torres signs a contract extension at the Camp Nou.
Rather than trigger that payment, the Catalan club are said to be prepared to let the 26-year-old leave instead.
Selling Ferran now makes financial sense for Barca
With Torres out of contract next summer, Barcelona are wary of losing him for nothing if no agreement is reached soon.
Cashing in this window would allow them to recoup a fee rather than risk a free departure in twelve months, while also sidestepping the payment due to City.
Paris Saint-Germain have been credited with interest in the forward, though they are yet to make an approach formally.
It has been a mixed few years for Torres since he left Manchester City, where he won the Premier League, FA Cup and League Cup during his time at the Etihad.
He arrived at Barcelona with a reputation as one of Europe’s most exciting young forwards, but has had to fight for a regular starting role amid fierce competition for places.
Last season brought some encouraging signs. Torres scored 21 goals in 49 appearances as Barcelona retained their La Liga title and lifted the Supercopa de España.
But his campaign was also littered with inconsistency — a run of 14 games without a goal between late January and mid-April underlined the up-and-down nature of his season, and he has never quite nailed down a place as first-choice striker.
A striker department in transition
A departure for Torres would leave Barcelona without either of their main forward options from last season.
Robert Lewandowski has already left on a free transfer, joining Major League Soccer side Chicago Fire after his contract expired, meaning the club’s two most senior strikers could both be gone within the space of a few months.
Barcelona have already moved to freshen up their attacking options. They have completed an €80m deal for Newcastle United winger Anthony Gordon, and are closing in on a move for Borussia Dortmund forward Karim Adeyemi.
The club’s priority for a genuine central striker, though, remains Atlético Madrid’s Julián Álvarez, with president Joan Laporta having made no secret of his admiration for the Argentina international even as Atlético continue to insist he is not for sale.
For Manchester City, the situation is a reminder of the value still tied up in players who left the club some time ago.
Add-on clauses of this kind have become increasingly common in modern transfer deals, and City have benefited from a string of sell-on and performance-related payments in recent windows as academy graduates and former first-teamers move on elsewhere.
Whether or not Torres stays at Barcelona, City’s finance department will be watching the situation closely — either collecting a final add-on or seeing that clause quietly expire.
For now, Torres’ next move remains unresolved. Barcelona would prefer a sale that brings in a fee this summer, but with no concrete offer yet on the table, his future — much like that of Barcelona’s forward line as a whole — is very much in flux as the transfer window builds toward its climax.
