Manchester City’s 5-3 demolition of Sunderland at the Etihad Stadium was supposed to be the kind of statement win that shifts perceptions. For Sky Sports pundit Paul Merson, it did the opposite.
Merson, who backed his former club Arsenal to win the Premier League before a ball was kicked this season, says the eight-goal thriller has only hardened his belief that Enzo Maresca’s City will fall short again this time around.
It is a notable stance given the context. Arsenal were thumped by Brighton at the weekend, a result that would ordinarily hand momentum to their closest challengers.
Merson admits he expected Manchester City to seize on that opening if they beat Sunderland convincingly. Instead, watching the game unfold at the Etihad left him more convinced than ever that the title is beyond Maresca’s reach.
Despite conceding three at home, City’s ability to keep scoring — five goals against a Sunderland side that arrived unbeaten in three of their previous four matches — was, in Merson’s eyes, evidence of fragility rather than firepower.
Asked directly whether he had misjudged Arsenal’s credentials after their Brighton mauling, Merson was unequivocal: “There’s no way Manchester City win the league.”
A season of transition under Maresca
His opinion arrives at a fascinating moment for City, who are adjusting to life under Maresca after Pep Guardiola’s decade-long reign at the Etihad came to an end in the summer.
Maresca’s start has been eye-catching by any measure, with City winning the bulk of their opening fixtures across competitions and sitting at the top of the Premier League table.
Yet Merson’s scepticism reflects a broader debate among pundits over whether an entertaining, high-scoring City side under their new head coach can match the defensive resilience that underpinned Guardiola’s most successful years.
Bookmakers move against Merson’s prediction
The betting markets, however, tell a different story to Merson’s assessment. In the aftermath of City’s win, bookmakers shortened their odds on Maresca’s side lifting the title, with prices now sitting between 5/4 and 13/8.
Arsenal, who had been odds-on favourites to retain their crown before the Brighton defeat, have drifted out to around evens, with some firms placing City almost neck-and-neck with the Gunners at 11/10.
That shift suggests the wider football world sees City’s Sunderland win rather differently to Merson — as a sign of a title challenge gathering pace rather than one running out of steam.
What comes next for the top two
Both sides face testing assignments once the international break concludes. City travel to Anfield on 11 October to face a Liverpool team that, despite mixed form under new head coach Andoni Iraola, remain unbeaten in all competitions since his appointment.
Arsenal, meanwhile, host Leeds United the day before, in an early kick-off that can prove awkward for squads returning from international duty.
Daniel Farke’s Leeds side are also unbeaten this season, meaning neither of the Premier League’s front-runners can expect straightforward passage through the next round of fixtures.
