Erling Haaland’s injury: Man City superstar who could replace him revealed

Manchester City’s Premier League victory over Ipswich Town was overshadowed by fresh injury concerns after Erling Haaland was forced off late in the game, raising doubts over his availability for the club’s upcoming Champions League fixture.

City edged out newly promoted Ipswich 3-2 at the Etihad Stadium, with Phil Foden opening the scoring before Haaland struck twice to seal the points.

The Norwegian has been in prolific form this season, having scored eight goals in just seven appearances, but the three points came at a cost as he was seen limping heavily as he left the pitch at full time.

According to Sky Sports reporter Jack Gaughan, Haaland “went straight down the tunnel” at the final whistle, moving gingerly in a manner that suggested a possible knee problem.

The club has not yet confirmed the extent of the issue, but the sight of their top scorer struggling to walk will concern head coach Enzo Maresca ahead of a demanding run of fixtures.

Haaland was not the only City player to cause fitness worries. Antoine Semenyo also added to the squad’s growing injury list and leaving Maresca with thinning options in attack.

Samba poised for chance after Carabao Cup heroics

Complicating matters further for City is the lack of a recognised backup striker following Omar Marmoush’s summer move to Tottenham Hotspur, which left the club without a natural alternative to Haaland in the senior squad.

That shortage could open the door for 17-year-old academy forward Floyd Samba, who has already caught Maresca’s eye this season.

The teenager was given a full 90 minutes against Norwich City in the Carabao Cup and repaid the faith shown in him, scoring twice in a comfortable 5-0 win.

Samba was influential throughout that performance, creating two chances and registering more shots than any other player on the pitch, according to data from FotMob.

Despite that eye-catching display, Samba has not featured for the first team since, and few would expect him to be thrust straight into Premier League action.

However, with City’s attacking options stretched, there is a growing case for the youngster to train regularly with the senior squad and be considered as an option from the bench if Haaland’s injury proves serious.

Foden and Ndiaye among options to fill the void

Should Haaland be sidelined for any length of time, Maresca does have alternatives, even if none offer a like-for-like replacement.

Semenyo, despite his own knock, has previously operated as a central striker during his career, while Iliman Ndiaye has also featured through the middle in the past. Both players would allow City to maintain attacking width elsewhere in the side if shifted into a more central role.

Foden, meanwhile, has experience leading the line as a false nine, dropping deep to link play before runners attack the space in behind. It is a role he has performed effectively before and one Maresca could lean on again if required.

None of those options, however, represent a true replacement for Haaland’s physical presence and finishing ability, which is why Samba’s emergence has taken on added significance.

For now, City will be hoping the setback is not serious, with scans expected to determine the full picture in the coming days.
