Enzo Maresca has responded to the seismic news that Manchester City have reportedly been found guilty of the vast majority of the 115 charges brought against them by the Premier League — not with a statement of defiance, but with a quote from an ancient Greek philosopher.
While the Premier League has yet to confirm anything officially, multiple outlets reported on Friday that an independent commission has ruled against City on 114 of the 115 counts relating to alleged breaches of the league’s financial regulations between 2009 and 2018.
It is the outcome City had spent more than three years fighting to avoid, and one that could yet bring serious sporting sanctions once the process concludes.
Asked for his reaction, Maresca — who took over from Pep Guardiola at the Etihad in the summer — did not offer a conventional managerial response.
According to Metro, which cited an original report by The Guardian, his representatives instead sent journalists a screenshot of a quote attributed to Socrates.
A cryptic message, posted before the storm broke
The quote read: “The only thing I know is that I know nothing.” Notably, Maresca had already shared the identical line on his personal Instagram account earlier that Friday afternoon, just before reports of the guilty verdicts began to circulate.
The post — accompanied, curiously, by a picture of the manager’s feet — carried its own caption: “Time to breathe. Time to analyse. Time to learn.”
The timing has fuelled speculation among fans and pundits over whether Maresca had advance knowledge of the ruling, though nothing in his message directly referenced City or the case.
The Italian is not expected to address the subject directly until his next scheduled media duties.
For now, City’s official position remains unchanged from the one first issued when the charges were laid in February 2023. The club has previously stressed that the disciplinary process is confidential and ongoing, with the Premier League itself declining to comment publicly on the reported findings.
City are widely expected to appeal any confirmed guilty verdict, a process that could drag well into next year and delay any final determination on punishment.
The case itself was heard by an independent panel at the International Dispute Resolution Centre in London, with hearings running from September to December 2024 after a lengthy Premier League investigation.
City were accused of failing to provide accurate financial information and of not cooperating fully with the league’s inquiries. These are allegations the club has consistently and strenuously denied.
Maresca inherits not just the managerial hot seat once occupied by one of the sport’s most decorated coaches, but now also the shadow of English football’s biggest financial scandal in a generation.
He arrived at City in June following Guardiola’s departure after a decade that yielded six Premier League titles and the club’s first Champions League triumph.
