Frank Lampard has become the latest admirer of Elliot Anderson, praising the Manchester City midfielder after his Coventry City side were beaten 1-0 by Enzo Maresca’s men at the Etihad Stadium on Saturday.
A first-half header from Erling Haaland was enough to separate the two sides in a contest that marked the first meeting between the clubs in any competition since March 2002, when City won 4-2 at Maine Road under the late Kevin Keegan.
Coventry, back in the Premier League after a long absence, pushed City hard and had chances of their own to open the scoring, but they remain without a goal.
Lampard: ‘I Respect a High Level Player Like That’
Anderson, who joined City from Nottingham Forest in a deal reported to be worth £116 million, was one of the standout performers on the pitch.
According to figures from the data analysts Squawka, he attempted 155 passes and completed 143 of them, a 92.3 per cent accuracy rate, making him the first midfielder to reach 150-plus attempts at that level of accuracy in a Premier League game since Rodri did so against Sheffield United in December 2023.
He also had more touches, more final-third entries and more interceptions than any other player on the pitch.
It was enough to catch the eye of Lampard, who was seeing the 23-year-old up close for the first time.
Speaking after the match, the Coventry boss did not hold back in his assessment of the England international.
“A really good player. I admire him from afar. First time I’ve seen him in the flesh. Very talented, very smart.
“I think he’s going to be a very good midfielder for Man City. I respect a high level player like that, no doubt,” he said per City Xtra
It is a notable endorsement from a manager who won the Premier League and Champions League as a player and has since built a reputation as a shrewd judge of midfield talent from the touchline.
Maresca Praises Anderson’s Attitude Off the Pitch
City head coach Enzo Maresca, in just his third league game since taking charge at the Etihad this summer, was equally complimentary about a player he has quickly come to rely on.
Maresca pointed not just to Saturday’s performance but to a pattern that has run through the opening weeks of the season, including instances where Anderson has played through fitness setbacks.
“Really impressed! Not just today, I think he was very good against [Crystal] Palace, also very good against Bournemouth thinking he was one week with us and changed [due to] cramp.
“The best thing about Elliot is the day-by-day: he’s asking how he can learn, we sit with him, one-on-one video, we’re doing many things. And he wants to be better!” Maresca said.
City have now won all three of their opening Premier League fixtures of the season, having also beaten Bournemouth and thrashed Crystal Palace 4-1, a run that has eased any early concerns about life after Pep Guardiola at the club.
Tough Afternoon for Lampard’s Coventry
For Lampard, the result continues a difficult recent run in the Premier League, though his side will take some encouragement from restricting a City team packed with attacking talent to a single goal.
Coventry made changes of their own following a defeat to Hull City in their previous outing, but could not find a way past a City defence marshalled by captain Rúben Dias.
