Manchester City defender Ruben Dias has told supporters to expect an immediate response after his side were beaten by Arsenal in the Community Shield, insisting the squad will already have moved on by the time their next fixture comes around.

City’s traditional curtain-raiser to the season ended in disappointment, with the north London club claiming the silverware. For Dias and his team-mates, the defeat capped a summer of transition under new head coach Enzo Maresca, who is still shaping his squad and his ideas just weeks into the job.

“It’s the beginning of the season, it’s not good enough, many things are changing obviously, a new manager as well,” he said.

“Still, the way the game starts sets you off, they get comfortable into their game. But in the end as well, this is just starting, and the most important is we’re already looking forward and we’ll be ready for our next game!”

Dias himself is still finding his rhythm after returning later than some of his colleagues for pre-season training, and he was honest about where he currently stands physically and mentally.

“I joined midway [through pre-season], this is the third game since I’ve been back, the feeling’s been good,” he explained.

That admission offers a glimpse into the wider challenge facing Maresca as he tries to bed in his methods with a squad still finding its feet collectively, even if individuals like Dias insist their own form is trending upwards.

Lessons from a disappointing final

For all the frustration, Dias was adamant that a defeat in a season-opening final, painful as it was, could prove valuable if the right lessons are taken from it.

Manchester City have long treated the Community Shield as more than a mere exhibition, and losing it clearly stung a squad with the winning habit built up over recent years.

“Today it’s frustrating and it’s a Final, obviously we all want to win,” Dias said. “But if there’s a lesson to be learned on a Final, let it be this one because there’s a lot more coming.”

That final line carried the tone of a senior player looking to steady the ship early, rather than one dwelling on a single afternoon. With a new coaching setup, some fresh faces to integrate, and a long campaign ahead, City’s leadership group will be keen to ensure a proper bounce back.

Maresca, for his part, now faces the task of translating pre-season work into results once the Premier League campaign gets under way.
