Joe Cole names what will decide winner of Man City vs Arsenal match

Arsenal’s meeting with Manchester City this weekend is poised to be shaped by fine margins, with former Chelsea midfielder Joe Cole suggesting that “mistakes” and “moments” will ultimately determine the outcome.

The Premier League leaders travel to the Etihad Stadium holding a six-point advantage, although City have the benefit of a game in hand.

Victory for Pep Guardiola’s side would narrow the gap to three points and intensify what is already a tightly contested title race.

Despite Arsenal’s position at the summit, recent form has raised questions.

Their domestic campaign has faltered in recent weeks, including elimination from the FA Cup and a league defeat last time out. While they secured progress to the Champions League semi-finals following a goalless draw away to Sporting, performances have not fully convinced.

According to The Independent, Cole, speaking ahead of the fixture, urged caution when assessing Arsenal’s current standing, stressing the need to “encourage perspective” around their displays.

Fine margins likely to define outcome

Reflecting on the earlier meeting between the sides, Cole pointed to how little separated them during Manchester City’s 2-0 victory in the Carabao Cup final.

That contest, he believes, offers a clear indication of what may unfold again.

“I still think in this one-off it’ll be moments within the game, it’ll be mistakes [that decide the game]. It’ll be edgy, blocked off,” he said.

City head into the match in improved form, having recorded significant wins in recent weeks. Their attacking rhythm has returned, and there is a renewed sense of control in their performances, particularly against high-level opposition.

Cole was unequivocal in his assessment of the Cityzens’ status going into the encounter.

“Absolutely City are favourites. I don’t think it bothers them. He’s [Pep Guardiola] playing mind games with everyone else,” he added.

Nevertheless, the former England international believes Arsenal still hold a strong position in the title race, particularly if they can avoid defeat on Saturday.

“if Arsenal can avoid defeat, I think they win the league”.

That view reflects the current arithmetic of the table. Even a draw would preserve Arsenal’s lead and maintain pressure on City, who would still need to capitalise fully on their game in hand.

Title race finely balanced despite contrasting form

Former Arsenal defender Martin Keown also weighed in on the contest, acknowledging both sides’ recent trajectories.

While he admitted that “City have found their mojo again”, he maintained that Arsenal’s fate remains in their own hands—provided they can rediscover consistency.

City’s resurgence has been notable, with their last league defeat dating back to January. However, their campaign has not been without setbacks.

Draws against West Ham and Nottingham Forest have shown occasional vulnerability, and their heavy defeat to Real Madrid in European competition highlighted areas that can still be exposed.

Arsenal, meanwhile, have experienced their own inconsistencies. Their loss in the League Cup final in late March was a setback, and recent league results have added to the sense that momentum has slowed at a crucial stage of the season.

Even so, Mikel Arteta’s side approach the Etihad clash knowing the broader context remains favourable. With six league fixtures remaining, they control their own destiny.

City, by comparison, still have seven matches to play, including a rearranged fixture against Crystal Palace that could prove decisive.
