Manchester City are edging nearer to confirming Enzo Maresca as the man expected to take over from Pep Guardiola, with discussions between City and Chelsea progressing over compensation arrangements.
According to Sky Sports, Negotiations between the two Premier League clubs are ongoing as legal representatives work through the final details surrounding Maresca’s departure from Stamford Bridge. .
City have identified Maresca as their preferred candidate to lead the next chapter of the club’s success following Guardiola’s eventual exit.
The former Leicester City manager is highly regarded within the Etihad hierarchy and is viewed as someone capable of maintaining the philosophy and standards established during Guardiola’s remarkable reign.
While several aspects of the proposed agreement are still being discussed, there is growing confidence that a breakthrough can be reached in the coming days.
Officials from both clubs are working to finalise the financial package that would see Maresca returns to Manchester.
Compensation discussions enter decisive stage
The biggest hurdle remaining centres on compensation. Chelsea are entitled to a payment because Maresca still had three-and-a-half years left on his contract when he departed the club earlier this year.
Lawyers acting on behalf of both clubs are heavily involved in negotiations as they seek to agree terms acceptable to all parties.
Sources close to the process suggest that City are optimistic an agreement can be reached this week.
Although the broad outline of Maresca’s move is already in place, several key details still require attention before any formal announcement can be made.
Discussions have focused on the timing of his arrival, the composition of his coaching staff and a number of contractual matters.
Merson backs Maresca to thrive at the Etihad
Former Arsenal midfielder and Sky Sports pundit Paul Merson believes Maresca possesses all the qualities needed to succeed if he is appointed as City’s next manager.
Speaking about the Italian’s prospects, Merson expressed confidence that Maresca would adapt quickly because of his previous experience at the club and within the Premier League.
“I liked him at Chelsea. I thought he was a good manager. He’s going into Man City, he’s been there before, he’s worked in the Premier League before. He knows some of the players at City. I think he ticks every box.
“He’s not coming in trying to get used to the place, he’s not coming into a league that he’s never been in. I think he’ll go in and settle quite nicely.”
Merson believes familiarity could prove to be one of Maresca’s greatest advantages.

Unlike many managerial appointments that require a lengthy adjustment period, the Italian already understands the demands associated with working at one of the country’s biggest clubs.
Should the deal be completed, Maresca would inherit a squad packed with world-class talent. However, Merson also pointed out that strengthening the playing group remains a priority for City as they seek to remain ahead of their domestic rivals.
Competition for elite talent is expected to be fierce during the upcoming transfer window, with several major clubs searching for reinforcements.
“They’ll need a few players as well. But this is the problem: Liverpool, Arsenal, Man City, Man Utd, Chelsea all need players. There’s not that many players around.
“Who’s going to be able to produce and give the most money to these players?”
For now, City’s immediate focus remains on finalising Maresca’s appointment. Once compensation terms are agreed and contractual details are completed, the club will be able to formally unveil the man they hope can continue the winning legacy established under Guardiola.
