Pep Guardiola praised both youth and experience after Manchester City strengthened their pursuit of the Premier League title with an assured 3-0 victory over Crystal Palace.
On a night when City needed composure and quality, it was Phil Foden who produced one of his most influential performances of recent months.
Making his first start since the visit of Nottingham Forest in March, the England international played with confidence, creativity and urgency, providing two assists in a display that reminded supporters of his importance during the closing weeks of the campaign.
Foden had already hinted at a return to top form with an impressive cameo appearance against Brentford at the weekend.
Against Palace, however, he carried that momentum from the opening whistle and became central to City’s attacking rhythm.
The 25-year-old constantly found dangerous pockets of space, linked effectively with teammates and repeatedly caused problems for Palace’s defensive structure.
His movement around the penalty area gave City another dimension and helped Guardiola’s side maintain control throughout the contest.
Supporters inside the stadium recognised the quality of his contribution. When Foden was substituted late in the game, he left the pitch to a standing ovation after delivering arguably his finest display in several months.
Guardiola was quick to highlight the midfielder’s overall contribution, insisting his value goes far beyond goals or assists. The City manager explained how Foden’s work rate and positioning allow the team to function more effectively both in and out of possession.
“Playing as a holding midfielder, but in the last 20-25 minutes v Brentford he was outstanding,” Guardiola said according to MEN
“It is not about laziness or not running, he is running all the time and helps Bernie and then without the ball we want [him] close to the box and he is unique close to the box.”
The City manager has frequently spoken about patience in a player’s development, and once again emphasised that Foden is still improving despite his growing experience at the highest level.
“He’s 24-25 and have a lot to improve. He has to be who he is and after the experience, step by step.”
Bernardo Silva earns Guardiola admiration once more
Alongside Foden’s resurgence, Guardiola also reserved special praise for captain Bernardo Silva, whose consistency and tactical intelligence once again underlined his importance to the side.
City made six changes for the match, with one eye on the upcoming FA Cup Final, yet Silva retained his place and delivered another composed and disciplined performance in midfield.
“Bernardo is a grandfather already and Phil is still a little boy,” Guardiola added.

Guardiola has often described Silva as one of the most reliable players he has worked with, and the Portuguese international again demonstrated why he remains indispensable in crucial matches.
His energy without the ball, awareness in defensive transitions and ability to regain possession quickly helped City dominate key moments of the contest.
“Bernie I like a lot, the last game v Brentford for his defensive intuition,” Guardiola said.
“Second ball he is there. He has something unique. Everything is replaceable in life like managers and sporting directors but there are players which are a bit more difficult.”
Over the years, the Portuguese midfielder has become one of the manager’s most trusted performers, regularly adapting to different tactical roles depending on the opposition and the needs of the team.
