Football experts under serious attack for hyping talented Man City player

The excitement surrounding Rayan Cherki in England continues to gather pace, but not everyone is convinced the growing admiration is justified.

While the young playmaker has made an eye-catching start to life at Manchester City, former France international Christophe Dugarry has offered a sharply contrasting view.

Cherki’s arrival in the Premier League during the summer transfer window, in a deal worth €36.5m from Olympique Lyonnais, was seen as another statement of intent from Pep Guardiola’s side.

Known for his technical ability and flair, the 22-year-old had already built a reputation in France as one of the most promising talents to emerge from Lyon’s academy system.

Since making the move to England, Cherki has shown glimpses of the creativity that prompted City’s interest. Despite not always being a regular starter under Pep Guardiola, his contributions have been notable.

In the Premier League alone, he has registered three goals and ten assists in 26 appearances, while his overall tally stands at nine goals and 13 assists in 43 matches across all competitions.

His most recent performance, a commanding display in a 3-0 victory over Chelsea at Stamford Bridge, further enhanced his growing reputation.

Cherki provided two assists in that match, playing a decisive role in turning a closely contested first half into a comfortable win for City. Many observers in England credited him as the key figure in shifting the momentum in his team’s favour.

Praise in England, scepticism in France

Such performances have naturally drawn praise from pundits and supporters alike in the Premier League, where Cherki’s style has been described as inventive and unpredictable.

His ability to operate between the lines and unlock defences has made him an appealing addition to Guardiola’s already star-studded squad.

However, across the Channel, the reaction has been far more cautious. In France, where expectations for young talents are often shaped by a deep pool of emerging players, Cherki’s rise has not gone unquestioned.

Dugarry, who was part of France’s 1998 World Cup-winning squad, has been particularly outspoken in his assessment.

“He’s different from whom? What is Cherki’s style? Are the others blind? Are they clowns? Who is this guy different from?” he said per Foot Mercato

France currently boasts a wealth of attacking talent, and Dugarry questioned whether the Manchester City midfielder deserves to be singled out for special praise.

“Why should we treat him differently? Is he better than Olise, is he better than Doué? Is he better than Barcola?” he added.

By referencing players such as Michael Olise, Desire Doue, and Bradley Barcola, Dugarry highlighted the level of competition Cherki faces even among his compatriots.

Each of those players has also attracted attention for their performances, both domestically and in European competitions.

A question of consistency and modern demands

While Cherki’s technical qualities are widely acknowledged, Dugarry’s critique appears to centre on the broader demands of the modern game.

In particular, he pointed to the importance of efficiency and work rate—areas where even Guardiola has suggested the young midfielder can improve.

“We need to stop thinking that every time he touches the ball, it’s a one-man show… He needs to be more efficient in his game.

“Pep Guardiola said it, and he also explained that he needs to press more, and in modern football, that’s important.”

This emphasis on pressing and consistency reflects the evolution of elite football, where attacking players are expected to contribute defensively as well as creatively.

At Manchester City, Guardiola’s system relies heavily on coordinated pressing and positional discipline, meaning that even the most gifted individuals must adapt to a collective approach.
