Enzo Maresca has already chosen Man City’s next captain

Manchester City’s leadership structure appears set for another significant change this summer, with new manager Enzo Maresca reportedly preparing to hand the captain’s armband to Ruben Dias following the departure of Bernardo Silva.

The club enters a new chapter after a period of transition that has seen several influential figures leave the Etihad Stadium.

Former manager Pep Guardiola‘s era came to an end, while long-serving leaders Kevin De Bruyne, Kyle Walker and, more recently, Bernardo Silva have all moved on.

Last season marked an unusual departure from City’s traditional approach to selecting a captain.

Rather than allowing the squad to vote, Guardiola personally chose the leadership group ahead of the campaign. Silva was appointed captain, supported by fellow senior figures Ruben Dias, Rodri and Erling Haaland.

Now, with Maresca beginning his tenure as Manchester City manager, attention has shifted to who will become the club’s next on-field leader.

The Italian coach inherits a squad that is balancing experience with renewal as City seek to re-establish themselves among England’s leading sides.

Dias has long been regarded as one of the most influential voices within the dressing room.

Since arriving from Benfica, the Portuguese defender has developed into one of City’s most dependable performers and has regularly worn the armband whenever senior captains were unavailable.

According to reports from Football Insider, Maresca is expected to place his trust in the central defender by elevating him to the permanent captaincy.

Such a move would be viewed as a natural progression given Dias’ standing within the squad and his experience at the highest level of European football.

The 29-year-old’s leadership credentials have rarely been questioned. His commanding presence in defence, vocal communication and ability to organise teammates have made him one of the most respected figures at the club during recent seasons.

Football Insider journalist Pete O’Rourke believes the Portuguese international is the leading candidate to assume the role permanently under Maresca’s management.

Speaking on the Transfer Insider podcast, O’Rourke said: “There’s probably a big likelihood he will be captain now Bernardo Silva has moved.

“He’s obviously been captain before, so it’ll be interesting to see if he gets the armband under Maresca, or somebody else?

“Maresca wants to keep hold of the Portuguese international, especially with John Stones leaving the club. He will be keen to maintain some continuity in defence.

“Man City’s priority is to keep hold of Dias, but that’s probably not going to stop Real Madrid trying to sign him. If they get any indication that he could be prized away from the Etihad, I’m sure they will try and bring him to the Spanish capital.”

While several experienced figures have left the club over the past year, the defender remains one of the few established leaders still at the heart of the squad.

His potential appointment would also provide Maresca with a trusted lieutenant capable of helping new signings settle into the environment.

Real Madrid interest remains a talking point

Despite City’s desire to build around Dias, speculation regarding his long-term future has continued to attract attention across Europe.

Reports linking the centre-back with Real Madrid have intensified in recent weeks, with the Spanish giants believed to be exploring options to strengthen their defence.

The appointment of José Mourinho at the Santiago Bernabéu has only increased discussion surrounding a possible pursuit of his fellow Portuguese international.

Mourinho is reportedly keen to reinforce his back line and is said to view Dias as one of several potential targets capable of bringing leadership, experience and defensive quality to Madrid’s squad.

The rumours have gathered additional momentum following Bernardo Silva‘s move to the Spanish capital and the conclusion of Guardiola’s successful spell at Manchester City.

Some reports suggest Dias could be tempted by the prospect of a fresh challenge after spending several years in England.
