Manchester City could be preparing for a significant midfield rebuild this summer, with reports suggesting the club is pursuing both Elliot Anderson and Sandro Tonali as potential additions to strengthen the centre of the pitch.
The Etihad side have already seen major changes within the club structure in recent months, and further alterations to the playing squad may be on the horizon.
According to journalist Graeme Bailey, City’s interest in Anderson and Tonali is not viewed as an either-or situation. Instead, the club reportedly sees both players as important targets as they plan for the future.
The prospect of multiple departures in midfield appears to be driving City’s recruitment strategy.
Several established names have been linked with exits, creating the possibility of a major reshuffle ahead of the new campaign.
Bailey told TEAMtalk that City remain strong admirers of Anderson and have maintained their interest in the player despite growing competition from elsewhere.
“Manchester City have long been heading the chase, and they have reaffirmed their admiration for the player over the last week when they were spoken to.”
However, the club’s ambitions may extend beyond securing Anderson alone. Bailey indicated that City are working towards a more ambitious objective that would see both Anderson and Tonali arrive.
“I am told City made it clear during the process that they don’t see Tonali as some sort of alternative to Elliot Anderson – ideally they want both.”
Such a strategy would represent a considerable statement of intent. Bringing in two midfielders of different profiles could help City replace experience, maintain squad depth and prepare for long-term changes within the team.
The possibility of adding Anderson and Tonali also reflects a growing need to refresh the midfield department, particularly as uncertainty continues to surround several current players.
Midfield departures could trigger major rebuild
One of the biggest factors influencing City’s transfer plans is the expectation that multiple midfielders could leave the club.
Bernardo Silva is reportedly set to complete a move to Real Madrid on 1 July, bringing an end to a successful spell in Manchester.
The Portuguese international has been a key figure for many seasons, contributing goals, creativity and tactical intelligence across a variety of positions.
His departure alone would create a sizeable gap in the squad. However, Bailey believes further exits are possible.
“City know that Real Madrid remain hugely keen on Rodri, and there is every chance Nico Gonzalez goes too. And with Bernardo Silva already leaving, that leaves some major gaps in the squad that need filling.”
If those predictions prove accurate, City could lose three midfielders in a relatively short period.

Such a scenario would leave the club needing immediate reinforcements and help explain why recruitment officials are exploring multiple targets simultaneously.
Rodri’s future remains one of the most closely watched situations. The Spain international has been linked with Real Madrid for some time and continues to attract admiration from the Spanish giants.
Although reports suggest Madrid remain interested, there are also claims that the midfielder could wait until his current contract reaches its conclusion before making a decision on his next move.
That possibility has only increased speculation regarding City’s transfer activity.
Should the club believe Rodri is unlikely to extend his stay, it would be understandable for them to accelerate plans to bring in a replacement or at least secure additional midfield options capable of sharing the workload.
