Patrick Vieira names five qualities of Elliot Anderson, drops surprise comparison

Manchester City’s move for Nottingham Forest midfielder Elliot Anderson appears to be gathering momentum, with transfer specialist Fabrizio Romano reporting that negotiations have entered their decisive phase.

The 23-year-old England international has emerged as one of the most sought-after midfielders in the Premier League following an outstanding campaign with Nottingham Forest.

His performances have not only attracted the attention of some of Europe’s biggest clubs but have also established him as a key figure in England’s squad at the ongoing 2026 FIFA World Cup.

City’s interest in Anderson has been widely reported in recent weeks, and Romano’s latest update suggests the former Newcastle United academy graduate could soon be on his way to the Etihad Stadium.

While discussions between the two clubs continue, there is increasing confidence within City’s hierarchy that an agreement can be reached.

Romano indicated that the deal is approaching its conclusion and that plans are already being made for the player to complete the next stage of the transfer process.

Should negotiations proceed as expected, Anderson is likely to undergo medical examinations in the United States before officially linking up with his prospective new club.

Posting on X on 19 June, Romano wrote:

“Manchester City are confident to get Elliot Anderson deal done, now at the final stages after work behind the scenes.

“New round of talks to take place for the English midfielder who would undergo medical in the US before joining #MCFC if all goes to plan.”

The update will undoubtedly excite City supporters, who have watched the club reshape its midfield options in recent seasons.

Anderson’s energy, versatility and technical quality have made him one of the standout performers in England’s top flight, and many observers believe he possesses the attributes required to thrive at one of the country’s elite clubs.

With Manchester City entered a new era following Pep Guardiola‘s departure from the club, recruitment remains a central focus.

Bringing in young players capable of making an immediate impact while also contributing over the long term has become an important objective, and Anderson fits that profile perfectly.

Vieira sees a complete midfielder

Few opinions carry greater weight when discussing midfield excellence than that of Patrick Vieira.

The former Arsenal captain and ex-Manchester City midfielder is widely regarded as one of the finest central midfielders ever to grace the Premier League.

His understanding of the role, both defensively and offensively, has earned him enormous respect throughout the game.

It is therefore significant that Vieira has spoken so positively about Anderson’s qualities.

Speaking on The Rest of Football podcast on Netflix while reviewing England’s impressive 4-2 victory over Croatia at the 2026 World Cup, Vieira highlighted several aspects of Anderson’s game that have impressed him.

The Frenchman believes England’s midfield options offer a level of completeness that stands out even when compared with other leading international sides.

In particular, he singled out Anderson for praise, pointing to his intelligence, aggression and ability to influence matches in multiple ways.

Vieira said: “Yeah, you have different options in the French squad, but I have to say in England, in the midfield, I think they are more complete.

“And Anderson had everything that I like about the holding midfielder because he is really aggressive, and he’s a ball winner.

“And he dictated the game, but even in possession, he’s not hiding.

“He’s trying to find the space and he wants the ball.

“And then I think something that he is doing better than our midfielder is that he’s always trying to play forward and he’s trying to break the lines, and tried to find the players in between the lines.

“And that is something quite really special, and I think he’s quite a really complete midfielder.”

Vieira’s analysis focused on the qualities modern managers demand from central midfielders.

The ability to recover possession remains important, but today’s game also requires midfielders to progress attacks, operate comfortably under pressure and consistently make positive decisions when in possession.

According to Vieira, Anderson excels in all of those areas.

His willingness to receive the ball in crowded spaces, combined with his determination to move play forward rather than simply retain possession, has become one of the defining features of his game.

That forward-thinking approach has helped him stand out both at club level and on the international stage.

World Cup performances strengthening Anderson’s reputation

Anderson’s displays for England during the World Cup have only increased interest in his future.

Against Croatia, he produced another influential midfield performance, helping England secure a 4-2 victory while demonstrating the qualities that have attracted attention from Manchester City.

His ability to regain possession, dictate tempo and link defensive work with attacking movements was evident throughout the contest.

Rather than playing safe passes, Anderson regularly looked to unlock opposition defensive structures and create opportunities for teammates.

Such performances have reinforced the belief that he is ready for the next step in his career.
