Tottenham Hotspur’s hopes of landing Sandro Tonali this summer appear to have suffered a significant setback as Manchester City intensify their pursuit of the Newcastle United midfielder.
What initially looked like a transfer race favouring Spurs has now evolved into a fierce battle involving one of English football’s most ambitious clubs.
Reports emerging over the past few days suggest that City have made considerable progress in their efforts to convince Tonali to move to the Etihad Stadium, potentially leaving Tottenham facing an uphill struggle.
The Italian international has become one of the most sought-after midfielders in the Premier League, with Newcastle reportedly preparing themselves for formal approaches from multiple clubs.
While Spurs remain firmly interested, growing confidence within Manchester City’s camp could alter the direction of the transfer saga.
Tottenham’s interest in Tonali is well documented. Earlier this week, transfer expert Fabrizio Romano revealed that the North London side were actively pushing to secure the midfielder’s signature.
The prospect of reuniting Tonali with fellow Italian Roberto De Zerbi has been viewed as a major attraction for the player.
De Zerbi, who has taken charge of Tottenham, is understood to be a key figure behind the club’s pursuit.
The manager reportedly views Tonali as an ideal addition to his midfield and has received full backing from the club’s ownership group, ENIC, in his efforts to strengthen the squad.
However, Tottenham’s confidence has been shaken by developments elsewhere.
The Athletic reported on Wednesday that Spurs were facing “serious competition” from Manchester City.
That assessment was later reinforced by journalist Ben Jacobs, who disclosed that both clubs had already opened discussions regarding a potential transfer.
Jacobs wrote on X: “Newcastle braced for bids for Sandro Tonali and expecting multiple suitors.
“Spurs and Manchester City both in talks. Arsenal enquired in January and are still assessing midfield options for this summer.
“A return to Italy very unlikely due to cost, even though Tonali wants to play in Serie A again one day.
“Newcastle looking for around £100m including add-ons.”
Tonali remains a central figure at St James’ Park, and any club hoping to sign him would need to present a substantial financial package.
Despite the sizeable asking price, interest continues to grow.
Manchester City’s vision appears to be winning over Tonali
According to fresh reports from TEAMtalk, Manchester City have become increasingly optimistic about their chances of securing the midfielder should he decide to continue his career in England.
Sources indicate that Tonali has carefully examined the possibility of joining City and has been encouraged by what he has heard during conversations with club representatives.
The Premier League giants are entering a new era following the departure of Pep Guardiola.
With Enzo Maresca expected to be leading the project, City are looking to reshape certain areas of their squad while maintaining their status among Europe’s elite clubs.

TEAMtalk reports that Tonali has been “seriously considered the prospect of joining” Manchester City and has been “impressed by the project” presented to him.
The attraction reportedly extends beyond football matters alone.
The report states that Crucially, discussions were not solely focused on football matters.
It indicates that Tonali’s camp were particularly impressed by the wider package City outlined, including the long-term vision for the player, the role he would occupy within the squad and the support structure available to his family away from football.
Those conversations have ensured City remain firmly in contention despite the player’s desire to eventually return to Serie A.
