Enzo Maresca planning to sign ‘world-class’ defender as John Stones replacement

Manchester City are continuing to assess options to strengthen their defence ahead of the new season, with a defender in the Premier League emerging as one of the players admired by the club’s recruitment department.

Everton centre-back Jarrad Branthwaite has built a growing reputation as one of the Premier League’s most dependable young defenders and remains highly regarded among several leading clubs.

While City are not currently pursuing an immediate deal, the defender is understood to be firmly on their radar as sporting director Hugo Viana evaluates long-term solutions in central defence.

Any potential move, however, is expected to depend on developments within City’s current squad. The club are unlikely to enter formal negotiations unless there is movement in the transfer market involving one of their existing centre-backs.

Branthwaite’s performances over the last few seasons have attracted widespread attention.

Having developed into a key figure at Everton, the 23-year-old has consistently demonstrated composure on the ball, strong positional awareness and maturity beyond his years.

His importance to Everton has only increased under David Moyes, who views the defender as one of the cornerstones of his project.

As a result, the Merseyside club are expected to place a significant valuation on the player should any interested side come forward this summer.

According to Mail Sport, Everton would demand a fee exceeding £70 million before even considering the possibility of a sale.

The club’s financial situation means they are not under pressure to cash in on one of their most valuable assets, giving them a strong negotiating position.

City monitoring situation amid defensive uncertainty

Although Manchester City possess considerable depth in defence, there remains uncertainty surrounding the long-term futures of several players.

The club have already taken steps to keep Ruben Dias and Josko Gvardiol despite interest from clubs across Europe.

Both defenders remain central to City’s plans under new manager Enzo Maresca, who is expected to succeed former boss Pep Guardiola following the end of a hugely successful era at the Etihad Stadium.

However, questions remain over other members of the defensive unit. Nathan Ake has been linked with a possible departure and is approaching the final year of his contract, while speculation surrounding other senior defenders continues to circulate.

Those circumstances have prompted City to remain active in their scouting efforts, even if no immediate signing is required.

Branthwaite’s profile fits many of the characteristics City traditionally look for in a central defender.

He is young, Premier League proven, comfortable in possession and possesses the physical qualities needed to compete at the highest level.

His age also makes him an attractive investment for the future. Rather than signing players at their peak, City have often preferred to identify emerging talents capable of becoming elite performers over several seasons.

For that reason, Branthwaite’s name continues to feature prominently in discussions surrounding City’s future recruitment plans.

With the club already possessing Dias, Gvardiol, Marc Guehi, Abdukodir Khusanov and Ake among their defensive options, there is no pressing requirement to add another player in the position unless circumstances change.

Everton in strong position as City weigh options

Everton’s confidence in retaining Branthwaite stems not only from his importance on the pitch but also from their strengthened financial outlook.

The defender remains under contract and has shown no public desire to leave the club, allowing Everton to dictate the terms of any potential discussions.

Moyes is understood to be a huge admirer of the England international and views him as a crucial component in the club’s ambitions moving forward.

That admiration is reflected in Everton’s valuation, which is designed to discourage potential suitors unless they are prepared to make a truly exceptional offer.
