Manchester City’s relentless pursuit of another Premier League crown gathered momentum once again as Jeremy Doku produced a decisive moment to inspire a crucial victory over Brentford at the Etihad Stadium, ensuring the pressure now swings back toward Arsenal in the closing weeks of the campaign.
For the third time in the space of seven days, the Belgian winger stepped forward when Pep Guardiola’s side desperately needed inspiration.
With the title race entering a dramatic phase and every point carrying enormous significance, City understood that any slip-up against Brentford would hand Arsenal a commanding advantage before the Gunners’ meeting with West Ham.
The mood around the Etihad before kick-off reflected the magnitude of the occasion. City had already surrendered valuable ground earlier in the week after dropping points against Everton, rescued only by Doku’s stunning stoppage-time strike.
Another setback would have placed Arsenal in complete control of the race and potentially left Guardiola’s side facing an impossible task in the final weeks of the season.
For much of the evening, Brentford frustrated the Cityzens and threatened to drain belief from both the players and supporters inside the stadium.
Guardiola’s team dominated possession but lacked the sharpness and precision required to break through a disciplined visiting defence. As the clock ticked beyond the hour mark, anxiety began to spread across the Etihad, with Arsenal supporters undoubtedly watching developments closely from afar.
Yet once again, Doku provided the breakthrough.
Receiving possession on the edge of the area, the winger shifted the ball onto his stronger foot before unleashing a curling strike that flew beyond Brentford goalkeeper Caoimhin Kelleher and into the top corner.
It was a goal of exceptional quality and one that immediately transformed the atmosphere inside the ground.
The release of tension was unmistakable. Players celebrated with visible relief while supporters responded with the kind of roar that reflected how important the moment could become in determining the destination of the title.
Once City moved ahead, the familiar ruthlessness associated with Guardiola’s side quickly resurfaced.
Erling Haaland doubled the advantage after capitalising on a loose ball inside the penalty area, scoring a scrappy but important goal that removed any lingering doubt about the result.
Omar Marmoush later added a third in stoppage time to complete a victory that briefly moved City within touching distance of Arsenal once more.
Although the win does not completely alter the landscape of the title race, it ensures Arsenal cannot afford any complacency.
The north London club remain in a strong position, but City’s victory serves as another reminder that the defending champions are unlikely to surrender quietly.
Arsenal now face growing pressure in final weeks
The psychological aspect of the Premier League title race may now become just as important as performances on the pitch.
For long periods this season, Arsenal have looked capable of ending their wait for domestic glory. Their consistency, attacking quality and defensive organisation have earned widespread praise.
But City’s refusal to disappear from the race means the title battle remains alive heading into a defining stretch of the campaign.

Doku acknowledged the magnitude of the moment after the match and insisted City will continue fighting until the very end of the season.
According to City Xtra, he said: “It’s been a long season! When you arrive at this point, it’s all you’ve sacrificed for, you sacrifice everything to arrive at this point. And then you always find some [more] energy to push through, especially these types of games where everybody wants to be.
“We won already one trophy, we’re in a final, we’re in a title race – what’s a better position? We’re happy, and trust me we’ll find energy to continue to push for the next games.”
The winger’s comments reflected the mentality that has defined City’s dominance under Guardiola.
Regardless of fatigue or fixture congestion, the squad continue to find motivation when trophies remain within reach. Their ability to manage pressure-filled situations has often separated them from rivals in previous campaigns.
