Pep Guardiola has thrown his support behind defender Marc Guehi after the centre-back’s mistake proved costly during Manchester City’s frustrating draw against Everton last weekend.
City entered the contest knowing victory would strengthen their position in the title race and the visitors appeared to be in control after taking an early lead.
Guardiola’s side dominated possession for long spells and looked comfortable during the opening stages, but the momentum of the game shifted dramatically after an unfortunate defensive mix-up involving Guehi.
The defender attempted to play a routine pass back toward his goalkeeper, only for the ball to be intercepted by an opposing attacker.
The forward reacted quickly and calmly slotted the ball into the net to punish City for the lapse in concentration.
The equaliser stunned the home supporters and handed Everton fresh confidence as the match became increasingly tense.
Despite City’s efforts to regain complete control, the Merseyside club defended stubbornly and threatened on several counter-attacks.
Guardiola’s side eventually rescued a point thanks to the attacking influence of Jeremy Doku, whose energy and creativity helped City avoid defeat.
However, the dropped points left many supporters disappointed, particularly after the Sky Blues had looked capable of securing all three points earlier in the contest.
After the match, much of the discussion centred on Guehi’s error, with pundits and fans debating the impact of the mistake on City’s title ambitions.
Guardiola, though, refused to place blame solely on the defender and instead chose to highlight the overall quality of his performance.
Speaking during his pre-match press conference ahead of City’s next fixture, the Spaniard backed the England international and reminded critics that mistakes are an unavoidable part of football.
“He made a top game. He knows he made a mistake, but it’s part of the game. Apart from that, he made a top game.” Guardiola said per City Xtra
Guardiola stands firmly behind his defender
Guardiola has built a reputation throughout his managerial career for defending players after difficult moments, and his response to Guehi’s error followed a familiar pattern.
Rather than focusing on the single mistake, the City manager emphasised the defender’s overall contribution across the match.

The City boss appeared keen to protect the confidence of the defender, especially at a stage of the season when pressure levels continue to rise.
Guardiola understands that defensive errors often attract heavy criticism because they frequently lead directly to goals, but he also recognises the importance of maintaining belief within his squad.
Guehi, who has been praised for his composure, positioning and ability on the ball, endured a difficult moment that briefly overshadowed an otherwise solid display.
Before the mistake, the defender had dealt effectively with Everton’s attacking threats and had shown calmness in possession.
The manager’s comments reflected his long-standing belief that players improve best when they feel trusted rather than attacked.
