Sergio Aguero names two players that could win Premier League title for Man City

Sergio Agüero believes two emerging talents could prove decisive in Manchester City’s pursuit of more silverware this season, highlighting the growing influence of Nico O’Reilly and Abdukodir Khusanov in a side chasing domestic dominance.

The former City striker, who remains one of the most iconic figures in the club’s history, has pointed to the pair as key contributors during a crucial phase of the campaign, as Pep Guardiola’s side attempt to balance transition with sustained success.

City have already secured the Carabao Cup this season, overcoming Arsenal at Wembley, and remain firmly in contention for the Premier League title.

With the run-in intensifying, Guardiola’s squad have found form at just the right time.

A sequence of six consecutive victories across competitions since March has propelled them back into the title conversation, even as structural changes behind the scenes—led by director of football Hugo Viana—signal a new era at the club.

Rising influence in a settled side

A key factor behind City’s resurgence has been the stability within the starting line-up.

In recent weeks, Guardiola has resisted heavy rotation, instead placing trust in a core group of players capable of delivering under pressure. Among those, O’Reilly and Khusanov have emerged as central figures.

O’Reilly’s performances, in particular, have drawn widespread attention. The young midfielder has enjoyed a standout campaign, combining composure with attacking intent, and is increasingly viewed as one of the brightest prospects in English football.

His consistency has not only strengthened City’s midfield but has also placed him firmly in contention for individual honours.

Speaking during an interview with stake in April, Agüero acknowledged the midfielder’s impact while reflecting on award recognition.

“It’s very strange how they choose the best young player, but yes, today (Nico O’Reilly) has a very good chance (to win the PFA Young Player of the Year award),” he said.

“I don’t know the full list of nominees but if City win this weekend against Arsenal (they did) and then the next game (against Burnley, which they also won 1-0), he’ll take it because the decision is being made now. He’s having a very good season.”

O’Reilly’s contributions during that stretch reinforced Agüero’s view that the youngster is capable of influencing outcomes at the highest level.

Alongside him, Khusanov has provided a dependable presence in defence. The Uzbek international has stepped in during a period when injuries and selection challenges have tested City’s back line, offering both physicality and pace.

His displays have allowed Guardiola to maintain balance across the pitch, particularly in matches where defensive discipline has been paramount.

Defensive promise and long-term potential

Khusanov’s development has also caught the attention of both his manager and Agüero, with the latter emphasising the importance of consistency over time when assessing a player’s true level.

“Khusanov is fast, aggressive – I like him. But as with (Rayan) Cherki, you have to see how he develops over time. I always end up valuing a player by how long he maintains his level,” Agüero explained.

“If he keeps this level for three or four years, we can already say he is one of the best defenders in the world.

“Today, he has a lot of potential and if he stays on this road. But right now, there are other defenders who maintain the same level every year. With Khusanov behind, it makes a difference – at least what we are seeing this year.”

While Khusanov’s immediate impact has been clear, Agüero’s comments underline the demands of sustaining excellence in elite football—a benchmark that defines the very best defenders in the modern game.
