Pep Guardiola breaks silence on next season plans at Manchester City

Pep Guardiola has insisted that the challenges faced by Manchester City this season will shape his thinking heading into the next campaign, while also playing down suggestions he could step away from the club in the summer.

The City manager has been the subject of persistent speculation in recent weeks, with reports claiming he might bring an end to his long and successful spell in Manchester despite still having a year remaining on his current contract.

The rumours suggested the Spaniard was considering closing the chapter on what would mark a decade in charge at the Etihad Stadium.

Yet, speaking before his side’s upcoming fixture against Everton, Guardiola offered a more measured outlook.

Rather than hinting at a departure, he reflected on the campaign with a sense of perspective, underlining that the experiences—both positive and disappointing—would be valuable going forward.

Learning from a demanding campaign

Guardiola pointed to the broader context of City’s season, highlighting that it has not been without success.

While the club may not have reached every target set at the beginning of the campaign, there have still been notable achievements along the way, as well as continued competitiveness at the highest level.

“This season, we won the Carabao Cup, Final of the FA Cup again, still fighting against this Arsenal. So what can I say? It’s really good,” he said via City Xtra

“I’d love to go through in the Champions League, but the level is higher and it’ll be good learnings for me for the next season.”

His remarks suggest a manager who remains deeply engaged in the process of improvement, and who will likely remain at the club beyond this campaign.

For Guardiola, setbacks—particularly in elite competitions—are not simply disappointments but opportunities to refine ideas and approaches.

City’s performances in Europe, in particular, appear to have provided food for thought. While the club has consistently been among the continent’s strongest sides in recent years, Guardiola acknowledged that the margins at that level remain extremely fine.

The implication is clear: maintaining dominance domestically is one challenge, but conquering Europe requires constant evolution.

Calmness, pressure and long-term vision

Beyond the tactical and competitive aspects, Guardiola also offered an insight into his mindset during the closing stages of the season.

Compared to previous campaigns, he described a greater sense of calm, particularly when dealing with the pressures associated with qualification for elite competitions such as the UEFA Champions League.

“The process between games, I’m more calm than last season. Last season was 24 hours thinking about what happens if we won’t qualify for the #UCL. I felt that a lot.”

That contrast highlights how the psychological demands of management can shift from year to year, depending on circumstances and expectations.

He went on to broaden the discussion, reflecting on the wider impact that success—or failure—can have on a football club. In doing so, he underlined the importance of stability, both on and off the pitch.

“I can imagine when a team is not relegated, this kind of stuff, it changes clubs, the players, financially you can’t do investment for good players. At the end, it’s the reason why the team has success, because they have good players.”

His comments point to a fundamental principle: performance and financial strength are closely linked.

Clubs that maintain their status and compete at a high level are better positioned to attract and retain top talent, which in turn sustains their success.
