Man City planning to splash £60M on another world-class winger – Report

Manchester City are considering a potential summer move for Rafael Leao, with the AC Milan forward attracting attention from several of Europe’s elite sides.

Leao has continued to underline his reputation as one of the most exciting wide players on the continent, contributing nine goals in Serie A this season.

His performances have helped Milan remain competitive near the top of the table, currently sitting third behind Napoli and Inter Milan, with the latter closing in on the league title.

At 26, the Portugal international is approaching what many consider the peak years of his career.

With the 2026 FIFA World Cup on the horizon, Leao is expected to be a central figure for his country, lining up alongside established names such as Cristiano Ronaldo, Bruno Fernandes and City captain Bernardo Silva.

The global stage of the World Cup, to be hosted across the United States, Canada and Mexico, is likely to further amplify interest in Leao’s services.

Clubs across Europe are already monitoring his situation closely, particularly as Milan navigate financial pressures ahead of the upcoming transfer window.

Daily Mail reported that Milan may be prepared to listen to offers for several key players as they attempt to comply with financial regulations in Italy.

Leao, valued at around £60 million, is among those whose future could come under scrutiny, especially with just two years remaining on his current contract — a factor that could influence negotiations.

Competition intensifies for Leao’s signature

City are not alone in their admiration. Liverpool FC, Manchester United and Real Madrid have all been linked with the winger in recent months, while FC Barcelona have previously shown interest but are believed to be exploring more cost-effective alternatives.

Liverpool’s need for reinforcements in wide areas could become particularly urgent, following the expected departure of Mohamed Salah at the end of the season.

Across Manchester, United’s transfer ambitions may hinge on their financial outlook.

Interim manager Michael Carrick is reportedly close to guiding the club back into the UEFA Champions League for the 2026–27 campaign. Qualification for Europe’s top competition would provide a financial boost, potentially making a high-profile signing such as Leao more attainable.

Meanwhile, Real Madrid’s interest reflects their long-term approach to squad evolution.

Despite already boasting one of the world’s premier left-sided attackers in Vinicius Junior, the Spanish giants are understood to be considering further additions as they look to refresh and maintain their competitive edge.

City’s internal dynamics and Milan’s financial balancing act

For Manchester City, much may depend on internal preferences and recruitment strategy.

The club’s sporting director, Hugo Viana, is thought to hold a favourable view of Leao, potentially influenced by their shared Portuguese background.

Whether that connection translates into a formal move remains uncertain, but it adds an intriguing layer to City’s interest.

City’s squad already contains significant attacking depth, but the possibility of adding a player of Leao’s profile — pace, directness and flair — could appeal as they seek to maintain dominance both domestically and in Europe.

His versatility across the front line would also align with the tactical flexibility often demanded at the Etihad Stadium.
