Pep Guardiola already has five John Stones replacements

There are few players in modern football who can claim to have reshaped their role at the highest level, but John Stones is firmly in that category.

Over the course of his time with Manchester City, the England defender evolved from a composed centre-back into a hybrid figure, equally comfortable dictating play in midfield as he was repelling attacks at the back.

His list of achievements speaks loudly. A central figure in City’s era of dominance, Stones lifted multiple league titles and played a decisive role in the club’s historic Treble-winning campaign.

On that defining night in Istanbul, when City edged past Inter Milan in the 2023 Champions League final, his performance captured everything he had become — intelligent, assured and tactically indispensable.

Now, with his departure from the Etihad Stadium looming this summer at the age of 31, the natural assumption would be that City are losing not just a defender, but a leader and a system-defining player.

Replacing someone of his profile is no simple task. Yet, in typical fashion, City appear to have already laid the groundwork for life beyond Stones — and they may not need to look far to find it.

A new generation ready to step in

Rather than turning immediately to the transfer market, City’s succession plan has taken shape from within.

The club’s academy pipeline, long regarded as one of the most productive in England, is now beginning to deliver defensive talent capable of stepping onto the senior stage.

One of the most intriguing names is Max Alleyne. The 20-year-old’s season took an unexpected turn when he was recalled from his loan spell at Watford in January.

What followed was an opportunity few young players receive — immediate integration into the first-team environment.

Alleyne handled that transition with composure. While still developing, he demonstrated the kind of positional awareness and technical ability that aligns with City’s demands.

His brief exposure suggested he is more than just a stop-gap; he could become a genuine option in Pep Guardiola’s defensive rotation next season.

City’s willingness to trust youth is not new, but what stands out here is the volume of emerging defenders being prepared simultaneously.

Strength in depth across Europe

Beyond the academy, City’s recruitment strategy has also added further layers to their defensive future.

In January 2025, the club invested heavily in Vitor Reis, securing the Brazilian for close to £30million. At just 20, Reis was not expected to make an immediate impact, and his loan move to Girona has provided valuable experience instead.

His performances in Spain have not gone unnoticed. Composed on the ball and comfortable in a possession-based system, Reis has shown traits that mirror many of the qualities Stones brought to City’s backline.

The plan, at least for now, is for him to return in the summer and compete for a place. Whether he remains at the club or heads out on another loan may depend on how crowded the defensive picture becomes.

He is not alone in gaining experience abroad. Juma Bah, another 20-year-old, has been honing his craft in France with Nice.

Meanwhile, Jahmai Simpson-Pusey has taken his development to Germany, earning minutes with Cologne during the latter half of the campaign. Both players are part of a wider network of young defenders being tested in different leagues, styles and tactical systems.

Then there is Kaden Braithwaite, still only 18 but already making early strides. Having debuted for City, he is currently leading the club’s Under-18 side in their pursuit of domestic youth honours.

Leadership at that level, combined with early exposure to senior football, suggests a pathway that could accelerate quickly.
