Micah Richards reveals major mistake that gave Man City victory against Arsenal

Manchester City tightened the pressure in the Premier League title race with a hard-fought 2-1 victory over Arsenal, a contest that hinged on a moment of attacking brilliance and a split-second defensive decision that has since drawn scrutiny.

Former City defender Micah Richards has offered insight into that decisive passage of play, focusing on Arsenal centre-back Gabriel’s reaction as Rayan Cherki advanced before scoring what proved to be the crucial goal.

While the finish itself was widely praised, Richards suggested the defensive approach in the build-up left room for criticism.

Speaking on The Rest Is Football podcast, Richards explained the thinking behind Gabriel’s hesitation, while acknowledging that, ultimately, the defender could have handled the situation differently.

“I just want to talk about it from a defensive point of view. A lot of people saying, ‘why is Gabriel backing off?’. Because you don’t want to be anywhere near him. Get somebody to come help you out.

“He made a mistake and he should have gone out [instead of backing off] but yes, a splendid goal.”

Richards’ assessment reflects the dilemma defenders often face against technically gifted attackers in full flow.

Backing off can buy time and allow teammates to recover into position, but it also gives the attacker space to execute.

In this instance, Cherki took full advantage, producing a composed finish that underlined his quality and swung momentum in City’s favour.

Defensive mistake proves costly

Arsenal had been competitive for large periods, but the fine margins at the top level were once again exposed.

Gabriel’s decision to retreat rather than engage immediately allowed Cherki the freedom to pick his moment, and the Frenchman did not hesitate.

The goal itself shifted the dynamic of the match. City, already known for their control in possession, grew in confidence, while Arsenal were forced to chase the game. Though the visitors eventually found a response, the earlier lapse had already tilted the contest.

Beyond the goal, Gabriel endured a challenging afternoon, particularly in his physical duel with Erling Haaland.

The Norwegian striker’s presence was a constant test, combining strength and movement to unsettle the Arsenal back line.

That contest came to a head in the second half during an incident that briefly threatened to escalate.

Gabriel appeared to make contact with Haaland in a moment of frustration, but referee Anthony Taylor opted against issuing a red card, a decision supported by the video assistant referee.

Haaland later addressed the situation, offering his perspective on the altercation and suggesting that the outcome might have been different under other circumstances.

“I think if I fell on the floor there, which I would not do unless someone really attacks me, I think maybe it would be a red card. I’m not sure.

“I haven’t seen the situation to be honest but it is what it is. I will not fall on the floor as easy as this. Yellow card for me, I don’t know why. He [Gabriel] comes up to my face, it is what it is.”

While some might argue Gabriel was fortunate to remain on the pitch, others viewed the contact as part of an intense but typical battle between striker and defender.

Haaland’s influence and Arsenal’s response

Former Manchester United forward Wayne Rooney also weighed in on Gabriel’s performance, suggesting that Haaland’s dominance played a significant role in the defender’s frustration.

“He had these little battles. Knocking him off his feet, making him have to touch him, have to foul him. He didn’t like it. He didn’t like it at all. And again, he had his all over his back.

“Haaland’s being strong, being a nuisance. This is what you want to see from Erling Haaland in every game. If he does this, he is unplayable.”

For Arsenal, the defeat represents a setback in the title race. They remain narrowly ahead of Manchester City, though Pep Guardiola’s side hold a game in hand, a factor that could prove pivotal in the closing stages of the season.
