Injury Crisis: 9 important players could miss Man City vs Arsenal clash

The Premier League title race takes centre stage this weekend as Manchester City host Arsenal at the Etihad Stadium in a fixture that could prove decisive in shaping the destination of the trophy.

Separated by six points at the summit, the stakes are clear. Mikel Arteta’s side remain in control despite last weekend’s 2-1 setback against Bournemouth, while Pep Guardiola’s team, with a game in hand, are building momentum at a crucial stage of the campaign.

City arrive in formidable form, buoyed by a run of three consecutive victories across competitions.

That sequence includes a 2-0 EFL Cup final triumph over Arsenal, followed by an emphatic 4-0 FA Cup win against Liverpool and a commanding 3-0 league result at Chelsea.

Arsenal, meanwhile, will be looking to steady themselves after a rare stumble, knowing that a positive result away from home could significantly strengthen their title credentials.

However, both teams face potential selection headaches, with a number of key players either ruled out or doubtful due to injury concerns.

City sweating over defensive absences

Manchester City’s preparations have been complicated by injuries in defence, an area that has been central to their recent success.

The most significant blow is the continued absence of Josko Gvardiol, who remains sidelined with a serious tibial fracture sustained earlier this year.

The defender underwent surgery after the injury on January 4, and there is still uncertainty surrounding his return.

With no confirmed timeline for his comeback, Guardiola may have to navigate the remainder of the season without one of his key defensive options.

Another concern is Ruben Dias, who has missed City’s last three matches due to a hamstring problem.

The Portuguese centre-back has been a cornerstone of City’s defensive structure, and his absence would be a significant setback.

There is slightly more optimism surrounding John Stones, though the England international is still not guaranteed to feature.

Stones picked up a minor calf injury while on international duty and has since been absent from City’s last three fixtures.

The defender is targeting a return for this clash, but he remains a doubt, and his inclusion may depend on a late fitness test.

Arsenal dealing with multiple injury doubts

Arsenal’s situation is arguably more complicated, with several first-team players facing fitness issues ahead of the trip to Manchester.

One of the main concerns is Martin Odegaard, whose absence has been felt in recent matches.

The Arsenal captain has missed the last two games due to a knee problem sustained in European competition.

The potential absence of their creative fulcrum would be a significant blow for Arteta’s side, particularly in a match where control and precision in midfield could be decisive.

There is also uncertainty surrounding Noni Madueke, who was forced off during a midweek Champions League fixture.

The winger was seen limping after the match, raising initial fears of a serious injury. However, subsequent assessments have provided encouragement, with reports indicating the issue is not as severe as first thought.

Madueke could yet be available for selection, offering a potential boost to Arsenal’s attacking options.

In contrast, Bukayo Saka has been ruled out. The winger has not featured since the EFL Cup final defeat to Manchester City and continues to recover from an Achilles problem.

His absence deprives Arsenal of one of their most influential attacking players, known for his consistency and ability to deliver in high-pressure moments.

Defensive concerns also persist for the visitors. Jurrien Timber is working his way back from a groin issue sustained against Everton and remains a doubt for the trip to the Etihad.

Similarly, Riccardo Calafiori has missed recent matches and is considered a major doubt, although there is still hope he could recover in time to feature.

Further compounding Arsenal’s injury list is the absence of Mikel Merino. The midfielder is continuing his rehabilitation following surgery on a fractured foot and is not expected to return imminently.

His absence limits Arteta’s options in midfield, an area that will be crucial against City’s well-drilled unit.
