Manchester City have moved to position themselves in the race for one of Europe’s most promising young forwards, with the club initiating discussions over a potential summer move for Bayer Leverkusen’s highly rated teenager Christian Kofane.
As the transfer window approaches, attention is beginning to shift from matters on the pitch to strategic planning behind the scenes.
City’s hierarchy, led by director of football Hugo Viana, are understood to be mapping out a recruitment drive that balances immediate needs with long-term investment in emerging talent.
While strengthening key areas such as midfield and right-back remains a priority, the broader philosophy of the City Football Group continues to focus on identifying and developing the next generation of elite players.
That approach has now led them to Kofane, a forward whose rapid rise in Germany has not gone unnoticed across Europe.
According to journalist Graeme Bailey, City have already made contact regarding the 19-year-old, who currently plays for Bayer Leverkusen.
The young striker featured prominently in a memorable night earlier this season, playing 84 minutes in Leverkusen’s 2-0 victory over City in the UEFA Champions League at the Etihad Stadium in November 2025.
That performance appears to have left a lasting impression.
Kofane, a Cameroon international, is widely regarded as one of the brightest attacking prospects in European football.
Still under contract with Leverkusen until the end of the 2028–29 campaign, he has steadily built a reputation for his direct style, movement in the final third, and composure in front of goal.
Alongside City, Premier League sides including Liverpool, Arsenal and Chelsea are all reported to be monitoring his progress.
Elsewhere, Newcastle United, Brentford and Everton have also been linked with a possible move.
Interest is not limited to England. European heavyweights Barcelona and Bayern Munich have been cited by the player’s representatives as admirers, with Bayern in particular known for securing emerging talent within the Bundesliga and integrating them into their first-team setup.
Kofane’s rising numbers and growing reputation
Kofane’s appeal is grounded not only in potential but also in tangible output. Over the course of the current campaign, he has contributed seven goals and eight assists in 1,833 minutes across 40 appearances in all competitions for Leverkusen.
Those figures underline both his attacking threat and his ability to influence games beyond scoring.
In the Bundesliga, his involvement has been more measured but still noteworthy. Despite starting just 10 league matches, he has featured in 25 games, scoring five goals and registering three assists.

With 1,084 minutes played in the German top flight — roughly equivalent to 12 full matches — there remains a clear expectation that his influence will grow as his role expands.
His underlying metrics further support that assessment. Averaging 3.15 shots per 90 minutes, he ranks in the top 75.9th percentile among forwards in the Bundesliga.
That willingness to take on opportunities reflects a proactive attacking mindset, though it is also an area where refinement could elevate his efficiency.
Equally encouraging is his accuracy. With 1.41 shots on target per 90 minutes — placing him in the top 84.9th percentile — Kofane has shown an ability to test goalkeepers consistently, an important trait for a striker operating at the highest level.
He averages 5.73 touches per 90 minutes in the opposition box, a figure that highlights his instinct for occupying dangerous spaces.
