The curtain has fallen on one of the most successful managerial reigns in English football history, and the impact of Pep Guardiola’s departure is already beginning to ripple through Manchester City.
City’s 2-1 defeat by Aston Villa at the Etihad Stadium marked Guardiola’s final game in charge after a remarkable decade at the club.
During that period, the Spaniard transformed City into one of Europe’s dominant forces, guiding them to 17 major honours, including six Premier League titles and the club’s long-awaited Champions League triumph.
Changes are expected during the summer transfer window, with City likely to strengthen in several areas.
The club have already been linked with Elliot Anderson, the highly-rated Nottingham Forest midfielder who is also attracting interest from local rivals Manchester United.
But alongside potential arrivals, departures may also shape the next phase of the club’s rebuild. And one player appears to be seriously considering his future following Guardiola’s farewell.
Gonzalez facing uncertain future
According to reports from The Times, Nico Gonzalez is now reassessing whether to remain at Manchester City after struggling for regular opportunities in the side.
The Spanish midfielder arrived from FC Porto in a deal worth around £50million in February last year.
At the time, he was viewed as a player capable of developing into an important part of Guardiola’s midfield structure.
Guardiola himself appeared to hold Gonzalez in high regard, once describing him as a “mini-Rodri” — a comparison that highlighted the club’s belief in his technical quality and positional intelligence.
Yet despite the praise, Gonzalez has found it difficult to establish himself consistently in the starting line-up.
He started only nine matches during his debut campaign and, although he enjoyed a stronger spell earlier this season with a run of 15 appearances, his involvement later declined sharply.
Over City’s final 17 matches of the campaign, Gonzalez was handed just two starts, a statistic that has reportedly left him frustrated over his role in the squad.
The uncertainty surrounding Guardiola’s successor may also be influencing the midfielder’s thinking.
Guardiola was instrumental in bringing Gonzalez to England, and his departure raises questions about how prominently the 23-year-old would feature under a new manager.
Interest from clubs in both Spain and Italy is believed to be growing, and Gonzalez is now understood to be considering whether a move away from the Etihad could provide a better platform for regular first-team football.

With three years still remaining on his contract, City are under no immediate pressure to sell. However, the player’s desire for greater involvement could become a decisive factor during the summer window.
Summer rebuild could accelerate exit
Manchester City are expected to reshape parts of their squad ahead of a new era, particularly in midfield where long-term planning has already become a priority.
The possible pursuit of Anderson may further complicate Gonzalez’s position. The Nottingham Forest midfielder has impressed with his energy, versatility and composure, qualities that have made him one of the most sought-after young English players in the Premier League.
Should City succeed in bringing Anderson to the Etihad, competition for places in midfield would intensify even further.
For Gonzalez, that scenario could reduce his chances of meaningful minutes and potentially push him closer toward the exit door.
