Predicted XI: This Man City lineup could humiliate Chelsea at Stamford Bridge

Manchester City head to Stamford Bridge on Sunday with both short-term focus and long-term uncertainty surrounding one of their most influential players.

As talk about his future continues to circulate, Bernardo Silva stands on the verge of a significant milestone in the Premier League.

The Portugal international could make history against Chelsea, while Manchester City look to maintain momentum in a tightly contested domestic campaign.

Despite ongoing speculation about his future, Silva’s attention appears firmly fixed on the present.

Earlier in the month, assistant coach Pep Lijnders indicated that Silva might depart at the conclusion of the season.

However, manager Pep Guardiola has since dismissed any certainty around that claim, suggesting he remains hopeful the midfielder will stay at the Etihad Stadium.

For now, Silva’s immediate concern is contributing on the pitch. Should he feature at Stamford Bridge, he will surpass Luis Boa Morte to become the Portuguese player with the most appearances in Premier League history.

Both players were level on 296 appearances at the time of writing, underlining the significance of Silva’s longevity and consistency in English football.

Selection dilemmas and defensive concerns

City’s preparations for the trip to west London have not been without challenges, particularly in defence.

Injuries have limited Guardiola’s options at the back, forcing him to rely on consistency rather than rotation.

Josko Gvardiol and Ruben Dias remain unavailable, both sidelined with ongoing injury issues.

Meanwhile, John Stones is a doubt after picking up a calf problem during international duty with England.

With those absences in mind, Guardiola is expected to keep faith with the same defensive unit. That could see Marc Guehi face his former club, adding a personal subplot to the contest.

In goal, Gianluigi Donnarumma is likely to start, shielded by a backline that may include Matheus Nunes, Abdukodir Khusanov, Guehi and O’Reilly.

The defensive reshuffle has tested City’s depth, but it also presents an opportunity for those stepping in to establish themselves. Against a Chelsea side capable of exploiting weaknesses, organisation and discipline will be essential.

Further forward, much will depend on how effectively City’s midfield can shield the defence while also supplying the attack. Bernardo Silva and Rodri’s partnership is central to that balance, offering both control and defensive awareness.

Guardiola has frequently leaned on Silva’s intelligence, work rate and tactical flexibility, and that is unlikely to change for such a high-profile encounter.

The midfielder is expected to operate alongside Rodri in a deeper role, forming a double pivot designed to control possession and dictate tempo.

Ahead of them, City’s attacking quartet looks set to remain unchanged. Erling Haaland will lead the line, supported by Antoine Semenyo, Rayan Cherki and Jeremy Doku.

Haaland’s recent form has been a tale of contrasts. The striker produced a stunning display in the FA Cup, scoring a hat-trick in a 4-0 victory over Liverpool — his 12th treble since joining City in 2022.

Yet in the Premier League, goals have been harder to come by of late, with the Norwegian failing to score in his last three appearances.

Manchester City possible starting lineup: Donnarumma; Nunes, Khusanov, Guehi, O’Reilly; Silva, Rodri; Semenyo, Cherki, Doku; Haaland
