Paul Merson says Man City will not beat Chelsea, drops match prediction

Former Arsenal midfielder Paul Merson believes Manchester City’s trip to Chelsea could end with the sides sharing the spoils, as both teams head into the weekend with contrasting pressures but similar uncertainties.

Writing in his latest column on Sportskeeda, Merson pointed to recent patterns in City’s league form as a key factor behind his prediction.

While Pep Guardiola’s side remain firmly in the title conversation, their inability to consistently convert performances into victories has raised questions at a crucial stage of the campaign.

“Chelsea are on a poor run of form at the moment. This is a tough game, but I don’t expect them to get beat here.

Manchester City are drawing too many games in the league and Chelsea away is not an easy fixture for them.”

That assessment reflects a broader narrative around City’s season. Despite their quality and depth, they have shown occasional vulnerability, particularly in matches where control has not translated into decisive outcomes.

Stamford Bridge, historically a challenging venue, presents another stern examination.

For Chelsea, the outlook has been far from straightforward. A dip in form has seen them struggle for consistency, yet performances at home have occasionally offered resilience.

Merson’s expectation that they can avoid defeat suggests a belief that Chelsea may rise to the occasion against elite opposition, even amid inconsistency.

The wider title race context also feeds into the significance of the fixture. Arsenal’s form has been widely scrutinised in recent weeks, with critics questioning their ability to sustain a challenge.

However, Merson was keen to highlight that City’s own dropped points should not be overlooked.

“People are talking a lot about Arsenal bottling the league, but over the last five league games, they have won two points more than City! So I don’t think Arsenal are doing that bad, especially with City also dropping points.”

Title race pressure grows on Guardiola’s side

As the weekend approaches, the stakes for Manchester City are becoming increasingly clear.

Depending on other results, they could find themselves trailing Arsenal by a significant margin before even stepping onto the pitch.

The possibility of being 12 points behind adds weight to what might otherwise be viewed as a routine away fixture.

In such circumstances, anything less than victory would represent a setback. A draw, while not disastrous in isolation, would do little to close the gap at the top and could further erode momentum.

Merson’s predicted a 1-1 result which reflects both Chelsea’s potential to frustrate and City’s recent tendency to fall short of maximum points.

Team news may also play a part in shaping the outcome. City are dealing with concerns in defence, with John Stones and Ruben Dias both facing fitness issues.

Their potential absence would deprive Guardiola of experience and leadership at the back, areas that are often crucial in tightly contested matches.

Additionally, Josko Gvardiol remains unavailable as he continues his recovery from a serious leg injury.

His absence has already been felt, and the lack of defensive options could influence both selection and tactical approach.

For Chelsea, there is some encouragement on the injury front, with Benoit Badiashile and Levi Colwill potentially returning to the squad. Their availability would provide a boost defensively, offering additional options and stability.

However, the list of absentees remains significant. Enzo Fernandez will miss the game due to disciplinary reasons, removing a key presence in midfield. Injuries to Reece James, Trevoh Chalobah, Filip Jorgensen and Jamie Gittens further complicate selection decisions.
