Defender drops big hint he’s leaving Manchester City after beating Arsenal

There was a sense of reflection in Nathan Aké’s words after Manchester City’s latest success at Wembley — a moment that may yet prove to be a farewell.

The Dutch defender, who has been part of the club since his move from AFC Bournemouth in 2020, played the full match as City secured a 2-0 victory over Arsenal to lift the EFL Cup.

But while the medal added to his collection, his post-match comments hinted that his time at the Etihad Stadium may be drawing to a close.

Aké has made over 170 appearances for Manchester City since arriving, contributing across multiple competitions in a period defined by success.

Yet his journey has not been without setbacks. Injuries — particularly recurring hamstring problems — disrupted his rhythm in earlier seasons, limiting his consistency and availability.

This campaign, however, has offered a different challenge. Fully fit but not always first choice, the 31-year-old has found opportunities more limited. His total minutes — just over 1,300 across 27 appearances — underline a role that has shifted, with only a handful of league starts despite involvement in cup competitions.

Even so, his performances have not gone unnoticed on the international stage. Under Ronald Koeman, Aké has remained a regular call-up for the Netherlands, featuring in every international break squad this season.

His presence in the national team reflects both his experience and enduring quality, even amid reduced club minutes.

Sunday’s final offered Aké a rare opportunity to take centre stage — and he delivered. Solid at the back and composed in possession, he helped City keep a clean sheet on a major occasion.

At the final whistle, one moment stood out: an embrace with manager Pep Guardiola, a figure who has overseen much of Aké’s journey at the club.

Reflecting on that exchange, the defender shared the message he received.

“He said he was super proud of me. He said he was super proud of me. And that I played a top match. We have been through so much together in the last six years.”

For Aké, it was also a moment of personal validation. After seasons in which fitness concerns often interrupted his progress, this campaign has at least allowed him to remain available.

Yet availability has not always translated into regular selection, and that dynamic appears to be shaping his thinking about the future.

Reports in the Netherlands suggest that a departure in the summer is increasingly likely, despite a contract that runs until 2027. While nothing has been confirmed, the tone of Aké’s remarks has added to the speculation.

Asked directly about what lies ahead beyond the current season, Aké did little to dispel the uncertainty.

“I have no idea, but winning the Carabao would certainly be a nice ending.”

It was a carefully chosen response — neither definitive nor dismissive, but one that clearly leaves the door open.

The phrase “nice ending” carries weight in the context of a player who has experienced both the highs of silverware and the frustrations of limited involvement.

City’s season itself has been one of transition. The squad has undergone changes, with new arrivals adjusting to life under Guardiola and his staff.

Among them is assistant coach Pepijn Lijnders, whose influence forms part of a broader evolution behind the scenes.

Aké acknowledged that the campaign has not always been straightforward.

“Due to the arrival of many new players, things went more ‘up and down’ this season. We had to get to know each other, feel comfortable in a different playing style, and get used to a new coach [Pepijn Lijnder]. Things are starting to click now, although we need to become more consistent.”
