We’re ready for Man City – Real Madrid midfielder reveals their game plan, sends warning

Real Madrid are preparing for another high-profile European night as they welcome Manchester City to the Santiago Bernabéu on Wednesday in the first leg of their UEFA Champions League Round of 16 tie.

The Spanish giants come into the encounter looking for redemption after their earlier meeting with the Cityzens during the league phase of the competition. On that occasion, Manchester City secured a 2–1 victory in Madrid, leaving Los Blancos determined to ensure the story unfolds differently this time.

Under the leadership of Alvaro Arbeloa, Real Madrid will hope to take advantage of playing the first leg at home. A strong result in front of their supporters could prove crucial before the return fixture at the Etihad Stadium in England.

Speaking to reporters during the pre-match press conference on Tuesday, Real Madrid midfielder and second captain Federico Valverde expressed belief that the squad is ready to face the challenge presented by Pep Guardiola’s side.

The Uruguay international highlighted the significance of the occasion and the role the fans will play in helping the team perform at its best.

“What’s coming up is incredible. We’re very confident going into a match that everyone loves to play. We know how important the fans are, because with them everything is easier. We need them, and then we’ll give it our all,” he said.

While anticipation is building ahead of the tie, Real Madrid will have to cope without one of their most influential attacking players.

French forward Kylian Mbappé has been ruled out of the first leg due to a knee injury, a setback that could affect the team’s attacking options.

Nevertheless, Valverde insisted the squad remains focused on the task ahead and believes the collective effort of the group will be vital.

The midfielder acknowledged Mbappé’s importance but emphasised that every member of the team must raise their level in his absence.

“He’s a very important player… but I, as a player, now that we’re focused, am only thinking about this: giving my all. It’s very important that we all give 100%.”

Mbappé’s injury has also attracted attention because the forward reportedly chose to seek further medical advice outside the club regarding his condition. When asked about the situation, Valverde made it clear he has full confidence in Real Madrid’s medical staff and the support system available within the club.

“I have everything here, it’s the best club in the world and the best people are here. I trust everyone here. I trust my body to a physiotherapist here and I defer to his opinions.

“I’m very calm and I’m only thinking about City. Nothing from outside is going to distract us.”

Despite the challenge, Valverde believes the tie presents an opportunity for the entire squad to demonstrate their quality. The midfielder stressed that success against a team like City will require contributions from every player and member of staff within the club.

He pointed out that the motivation within the dressing room is strong and that everyone is working with the same objective — producing performances that will make the supporters proud.

“Everyone. From the first player to the last; and from the first to the last member of the coaching staff.

“We are giving our all so that things improve and the fans can be proud of us. We are all pulling in the same direction. We are very united and working to the fullest.”

Real Madrid’s history in the Champions League often fuels belief in the club’s ability to rise to big occasions.
