Manchester City recovered from an early setback to defeat Newcastle United and move into the FA Cup quarter-finals, with Omar Marmoush once again proving a thorn in the home side’s defence.
City manager Pep Guardiola had made several changes to his team for the trip to St James’ Park and admitted beforehand that the atmosphere and challenge awaiting his players would be daunting.
Guardiola had described the prospect of going to a febrile St James’ Park as a “nightmare”, and for a brief spell in the first half it looked as though those fears might become reality.
Newcastle began the fifth-round tie with energy and determination, backed by a loud home crowd eager to see their side continue getting to the next stage in the competition. The hosts pressed aggressively and created early opportunities that unsettled City’s reshuffled defence.
Nick Woltemade almost gave Newcastle the breakthrough when he rose to meet a cross inside the penalty area, but his header was cleared dramatically off the line by Nico Gonzalez. The warning sign proved significant as Newcastle continued to threaten.
Their persistence was rewarded when Harvey Barnes struck to give the home side the lead. Timing his run perfectly to beat the offside trap, Barnes collected Sandro Tonali’s precise through ball.
With quick control, he shifted the ball onto his preferred right foot before curling a superb shot beyond the goalkeeper and into the far corner. The strike ignited the stadium, sending the crowd into celebration and placing Newcastle firmly in control of the tie.
Yet the goal had an unintended effect. Rather than unsettling Manchester City, it appeared to spark them into life.
City began to dominate possession and gradually pushed Newcastle deeper into their own half. Guardiola’s side increased the tempo, circulating the ball with patience before eventually breaking through.
The equaliser came after a period of sustained pressure. Jeremy Doku drove forward down the left flank and delivered a low, powerful cross that flashed across the face of goal.
Waiting unmarked at the far post was Savinho, and although the finish was unconventional, it proved effective. The ball struck his knee before bouncing over the line to bring City level.
Newcastle, having started brightly, suddenly found themselves struggling to regain their earlier momentum as the visitors finished the first half strongly.
Any hopes Newcastle had of resetting the contest at half-time were quickly disrupted as Manchester City resumed with the same authority that had brought them back into the game.
Only minutes after the restart, City moved ahead with a well-constructed attack that exposed the home side’s defence. Matheus Nunes advanced down the right before sending a measured pass across the penalty area.
Waiting at the far post was Omar Marmoush, who calmly controlled the ball before striking emphatically into the net.

The Egyptian forward, already known for his strong record against Newcastle, once again demonstrated his ability to punish the Magpies. The goal shifted the balance of the contest decisively in City’s favour and forced Newcastle into a difficult chase.
Before the hosts could reorganise, Marmoush delivered another decisive blow.
Receiving the ball just outside the penalty area, he created space for himself and unleashed a powerful shot that flew past goalkeeper Aaron Ramsdale. The strike left the Newcastle keeper with little chance of stopping it and effectively sealed City’s comeback victory.
Meanwhile, John Stones was full of praise for the incredible performance of Savinho. The Brazilian had a good game and was named the player of the match.
“How direct he was, his pace to touch it past you and get to full speed is incredible. He kept going, crosses, the chances and I’m so pleased for him,” Stones said after the match.
“It’s difficult coming back from injury, he came on in the last game and made an impact, and the same again today.”
