Manchester City could be preparing to say goodbye to one of the most influential players of the club era under Pep Guardiola.
For nearly a decade, Guardiola has built a side that has dominated English football and consistently challenged in Europe. Throughout that period, several world-class players have arrived, developed and sometimes moved on.
But few have embodied the tactical intelligence and relentless work rate associated with Guardiola’s style quite like Bernardo Silva.
A trusted source has indicated there is currently no sign of a contract extension being negotiated, making a summer departure increasingly likely for the Portuguese international.
Should that happen, it would mark the end of one of the most consistent and versatile partnerships of Guardiola’s managerial career.
During Guardiola’s tenure at City, many iconic players have passed through the Etihad Stadium. The club witnessed the departure of legendary striker Sergio Aguero before welcoming the prolific goal-scoring presence of Erling Haaland.
Defensive leader Vincent Kompany eventually handed the baton to Ruben Dias, while midfield authority from players such as Rodri and creativity from Kevin De Bruyne helped shape City into a dominant force.
Despite those high-profile names, Silva’s importance has often been defined by his adaptability rather than headline statistics.
Since arriving from Monaco in 2017, he has become one of the most dependable figures in Guardiola’s squad. Whether deployed centrally, on the wing or in deeper midfield roles, Silva has regularly delivered performances marked by tireless pressing, technical control and tactical awareness.
Guardiola has frequently relied on the 31-year-old in crucial matches, particularly during key stages of domestic and European campaigns.
In several high-pressure encounters, Silva has even been positioned on the right flank ahead of former winger Riyad Mahrez. That decision reflected Guardiola’s confidence in Silva’s ability to perform complex tactical duties against elite opposition.
City’s clashes with sides managed by figures such as Jurgen Klopp often demanded players capable of adapting quickly during games.
Silva’s intelligence made him the ideal candidate for those situations, and he consistently rewarded Guardiola’s trust with disciplined displays.
His versatility also allowed City to adjust their formation mid-match without making substitutions. For Guardiola, who places great value on positional flexibility and control of space, Silva became an indispensable part of the system.
Yet despite his importance, indications now suggest that the player’s time in Manchester could soon come to an end.
According to respected Italian journalist Matteo Moretto, City are not currently negotiating a new contract with Silva.
With the midfielder’s deal set to expire at the end of the season, the likelihood of him leaving on a free transfer appears to be growing.
Moretto reported: “Bernardo Silva is expected to leave Manchester City in June as a free agent.
“There are no ongoing negotiations to renew his contract.”

Such a development would inevitably raise questions about Silva’s next destination. In recent years he has frequently been linked with a potential move to FC Barcelona, although it remains too early to determine whether the Spanish side will make a concrete approach this summer.
Wherever Silva eventually lands, his departure would represent a significant moment in the Guardiola era.
Guardiola himself offered a revealing insight into his appreciation of Silva during an interview earlier in the season. Reflecting on the Portuguese ability to perform in the biggest stadiums and under intense pressure.
“There are players that can play everywhere, but there are few players that can play in the Bernabeu, Camp Nou, Milan, Liverpool,” the City manager said.
“There are players born to play on the biggest stages, to play for life or death – and Bernie is one of them.
“That’s why I think he’s been the player who played the most minutes with me here in this period, decade in Manchester.
“It’s because he’s reliable, he can play in three, four, five positions, and in that Bernie is extraordinary.”
