Pep Guardiola has revealed what Manchester City will need to defeat Newcastle United when the two sides meet at St James’ Park in the FA Cup on Saturday night.
The encounter will mark the fifth meeting between Guardiola and Newcastle manager Eddie Howe this season, continuing a rivalry that has become increasingly familiar for both clubs.
Manchester City currently hold the upper hand in their recent clashes, having secured three victories compared with Newcastle’s one.
City recorded a win in the Premier League and also triumphed twice over the Magpies in the Carabao Cup semi-finals.
However, Newcastle have already shown they are capable of upsetting the Sky Blues on their own ground, having beaten them at St James’ Park earlier in the campaign.
With both sides having faced each other repeatedly throughout the season, the managers and players are now well aware of what to expect.
Tactics, strengths and weaknesses have already been studied in detail, leaving little room for surprises when the teams line up again.
Newcastle manager Eddie Howe previously admitted that frequent meetings with Manchester City offer valuable lessons about how Guardiola’s team operate.
Repeated encounters, he suggested, have allowed Newcastle to develop a deeper knowledge of City’s style of play and tactical approach.
From Guardiola’s perspective, the feeling is mutual. By now, both teams have spent enough time analysing each other that neither side is likely to spring any major tactical shocks.
That familiarity means the match could come down to small details rather than grand strategic moves.
Guardiola acknowledged that when teams know each other so well, the difference between victory and defeat can be extremely narrow.
“We know each other quite well, no surprises. It’s not the first time this season.
“How many times we have played Newcastle and Eddie Howe? A lot.
“But it’s the same for them. It is what it is. When the margins are so tight the luck is important.”

While Manchester City may have won more often this season, Newcastle’s victory on Tyneside earlier in the campaign is proof that the Magpies can challenge Guardiola’s side when the opportunity arises.
For Manchester City, maintaining concentration will be key. Guardiola’s team are known for their structured build-up play and tactical discipline, but Newcastle’s high intensity can disrupt rhythm if City are not precise in possession.
The FA Cup also carries its own unpredictability. Unlike league matches, knockout ties allow little room for recovery if things go wrong, increasing the pressure on both sides to deliver on the night.
Guardiola’s acknowledgement that luck could play a role reflects that reality. When two well-prepared teams meet with detailed knowledge of each other’s systems, the smallest moment can shift the balance.
