Man City 2-2 Nottingham Forest: Referee under serious attack after this controversy decision

Manchester City saw their pursuit of the Premier League crown falter after being held to a 2-2 draw by Nottingham Forest, a result that left frustration simmering among the visitors.

City appeared poised to take maximum points when they edged ahead before the interval. Antoine Semenyo struck to give the Cityzens a narrow advantage at the break, rewarding a period of steady pressure.

Yet the contest shifted dramatically after half-time as Morgan Gibbs-White produced a clever and composed finish to restore parity and reignite the home crowd.

Pep Guardiola’s side regrouped and once again demonstrated their threat from set-pieces. Midfielder Rodri rose highest to convert a delivery from Rayan Ait-Nouri, powering a header beyond the goalkeeper to re-establish City’s lead. At that stage, the visitors looked in control and seemingly on course to keep pace at the summit.

Forest, however, were not finished. Elliot Anderson produced a moment of quality from distance, driving a fierce effort from outside the area that flew into the net and stunned the travelling support.

The equaliser set up a tense finale in which City pushed forward relentlessly, probing for a decisive third goal.

Despite late pressure and a series of advances into the final third, the breakthrough never arrived. The dropped points proved costly, allowing Arsenal to extend their advantage at the top of the table to seven points following a narrow victory over Brighton.

For City, the outcome represented a missed opportunity at a critical stage of the campaign.

“All the 50-50s have gone against us”

After the final whistle, City captain Bernardo Silva directed his frustration towards referee Darren England and the video assistant referee team, suggesting a pivotal decision had gone against his side.

The flashpoint came shortly after Rodri had restored City’s advantage. With the visitors leading 2-1, Erling Haaland appeared to be brought down inside the penalty area under pressure from Forest goalkeeper Matz Sels. Silva and several teammates immediately appealed, but their protests were waved away and play continued.

Moments later, Forest capitalised at the other end. Anderson’s powerful strike levelled the match and altered the complexion of the title race, intensifying the sense of grievance within the City camp.

Silva did not hide his dissatisfaction when speaking afterwards. “The Erling incident? For me, it is a penalty,” he said.

“What can Erling do? This season, we are used to it, we know how it works. All the 50-50s have gone against us.”

City’s players left the pitch visibly disappointed, aware that opportunities to close the gap on Arsenal may be limited in the weeks ahead. With every point carrying heightened importance, moments such as the disputed Haaland challenge take on added significance.

Forest, for their part, earned a valuable point through resilience and clinical finishing. Twice they responded to setbacks, demonstrating resolve against one of the division’s most formidable opponents.

As the title race intensifies, scrutiny on officiating decisions will inevitably grow. For Silva and his team-mates, the focus now shifts to ensuring their response on the pitch keeps their ambitions alive, even as questions linger over the calls that shaped this encounter.
