Real Madrid head coach Alvaro Arbeloa has urged caution over the condition of Kylian Mbappe before his side’s heavyweight European meeting with Manchester City.
Madrid are entering a decisive phase of their campaign, with domestic and continental ambitions hanging in the balance. The Spanish club remain locked in a fierce pursuit of Barcelona in the La Liga title race, while also preparing for a demanding UEFA Champions League Round of 16 encounter against the Cityzens.
Central to Madrid’s hopes is Mbappé’s fitness. The France forward has been dealing with a muscular complaint in recent days, casting uncertainty over his availability for one of the most anticipated ties of the season.
His influence on Madrid’s attacking play has been clear, and any setback would be a major concern for the coaching staff.
Speaking ahead of the Getafe fixture, Arbeloa addressed questions regarding his leading scorer’s condition and whether supporters could expect to see him against City.
“It’s very clear to us: what’s wrong, what we want. It’s that [Kylian Mbappé] recovers totally from discomfort, so he can come back 100 per cent, with complete confidence and security – when he feels totally recovered, and that discomfort has disappeared,” said Arbeloa.
Rather than rushing Mbappé back into action for a high-profile encounter, the priority is ensuring that the forward returns fully fit and free from risk.
With the season entering its most critical stretch, a recurrence would be far more damaging than a short-term absence.
Mbappé’s pace and clinical finishing have often provided Madrid with the decisive edge in tight matches. Against a side as tactically disciplined and technically accomplished as Manchester City, his presence would represent a significant psychological and practical advantage. However, the club appear determined not to gamble.
Pressed further on whether Mbappé might feature in either leg against City, Arbeloa remained measured in his response.
“We’ll see, day by day. He will see how he feels, and how he recovers and evolves,” he told reporters.
The 41-year-old declined to commit to a return date, emphasising that medical assessments and the player’s own sensations would guide the final decision.

“Right now it’s better not to give a timeline. We’ll see how he feels, and based on that, we’ll decide.
“We want him to return at 100 per cent, and when that happens, he’ll be back.”
Arbeloa and his staff are acutely aware that the Champions League tie will not be won in a single moment, but potentially across 180 minutes of intense football.
Mbappé’s availability carries both symbolic and strategic weight. His ability to stretch defences, create space for teammates and convert half-chances into goals makes him a focal point of Madrid’s attacking blueprint.
Supporters will now watch developments closely in the coming days, as the forward continues his recovery programme. Each training session, each medical update, will be scrutinised for signs of progress.
For now, the message from Madrid is clear: there will be no unnecessary risks. The club’s priority is to ensure that when Mbappé does return, he does so without lingering discomfort and with full confidence in his physical condition.
