Haaland, Gvardiol, Kovacic: Man City injury and return date ahead of Nottingham Forest clash

Manchester City tightened the Premier League title race with a narrow 1-0 victory over Leeds United at Elland Road, but the win came without one of their most influential figures.

Striker Erling Haaland was absent from the matchday squad, becoming the latest name on an injury list that continues to test manager Pep Guardiola’s resources at a crucial stage of the campaign.

City edged to within two points of leaders Arsenal thanks to a disciplined performance, yet attention quickly shifted from the result to the fitness of key personnel ahead of Wednesday’s meeting with Nottingham Forest at the Etihad Stadium.

Haaland doubt but optimism over swift return

Haaland’s absence was confirmed shortly before kick-off, with Guardiola explaining the situation in an interview.

“Two days ago, in the last moments of training, there were some problems. A little injury. It’s not a big issue, but not ready for today.

“We don’t have spies in the training centre to deliver the info to our media. I think it is not a big issue. We will see.”

The Norwegian forward’s fitness will be assessed in the coming days, though there are encouraging signs he could return quickly.

ViaPlay pundit and former Norway international Jan Age Fjortoft suggested the lay-off may be brief.

“It is reported that he will be ready again as early as Wednesday.”

If that proves accurate, Haaland could feature against Forest in midweek, providing a timely boost as fixtures continue to arrive in rapid succession.

City’s schedule leaves little room for extended recovery periods, making squad depth and careful medical management essential.

While Haaland’s issue is described as minor, the club are also navigating longer-term concerns.

Young defender Max Alleyne was unavailable for the recent meeting with Newcastle after sustaining a knock during the FA Cup tie against Salford City. The centre-back is targeting a return at some point in March.

Elsewhere, the most serious blow remains the injury to Josko Gvardiol. The Croatia international fractured his leg during a clash with Chelsea in January and is facing a prolonged spell on the sidelines.

No definitive timeframe has been placed on his comeback, leaving City without one of their defensive mainstays for the foreseeable future.

Kovacic progressing as City juggle busy schedule

Midfielder Mateo Kovacic is another player edging closer to fitness after an ankle problem that has sidelined him for much of the season. Though his campaign has been disrupted, there is growing confidence he will play again before the season concludes.

Guardiola has been measured but positive when discussing the Croatian’s rehabilitation.

“We think Mateo will be ready for the World Cup, probably even earlier. It’s a complex injury and treatment; things are monitored daily. Recovery is going well.”

City’s medical staff are overseeing Kovacic’s progress on a day-to-day basis, mindful of the need to avoid setbacks during the final stretch of the season.

With key players at varying stages of rehabilitation, the coming weeks will demand resilience and adaptability. If the Sky Blues are to sustain their pursuit at the summit, they may need to do so while carefully managing a squad that is not yet at full strength.
