Arsenal ‘ready’ to hijack Manchester City transfer as two ‘huge’ issues threaten move to Etihad

Arsenal are preparing to involve themselves in one of the Premier League’s most closely watched transfer situations, with reports suggesting they are ready to challenge Manchester City and others for Crystal Palace captain Marc Guehi.

The England defender has grown into one of the most reliable centre-backs in the country over the past two seasons, combining composure on the ball with consistency in high-pressure matches.

His performances for both club and country have placed him firmly among Europe’s elite defenders, and it is widely expected that he will not remain at Selhurst Park beyond the end of the current campaign.

Crystal Palace are aware of Guehi’s contract expires and his current value, so time is not on their side. The 25-year-old is approaching the final months of his contract, and that reality has shaped the interest surrounding him.

Palace have been here before, resisting offers while knowing a departure is inevitable. Last summer, Liverpool came closest to landing the defender after agreeing a £35m deal, only for the move to collapse on deadline day when Palace failed to secure a replacement.

That late twist proved costly for Liverpool, whose defensive struggles this season have underlined just how valuable Marc Guehi could have been.

The Merseyside club are still monitoring his situation, but the picture has become more crowded, with multiple Premier League rivals and clubs across Europe tracking his availability.

Manchester City, in particular, have emerged as strong contenders. Injuries to key defenders Ruben Dias and Josko Gvardiol have forced Pep Guardiola’s side into the market, and Guehi’s profile fits their need for a defender comfortable in possession and tactically disciplined.

Reports earlier this week suggested City and the player may already have reached a ‘verbal agreement’ on personal terms, although that claim has not been universally confirmed.

What is clear is that City’s interest is serious. Another report has described them as the ‘red-hot favourites’ to secure Guehi’s signature during the current window.

However, the path to a deal is far from straightforward, with financial and strategic considerations threatening to complicate matters.

While Manchester City appear to be in a strong position, Arsenal are said to be closely watching developments and are ‘ready to enter the race’ for what has been described as a ‘no-brainer’ transfer.

Mikel Arteta has prioritised defensive solidity since taking charge, and Guehi’s leadership qualities and Premier League experience would make him a natural fit at the Emirates.

Arsenal’s interest raises an important question about timing. It ‘remains to be seen whether Arsenal would be willing to make a bid or would bide their time until the summer when Guehi’s contract expires.

Waiting could allow them to avoid a transfer fee altogether, but it would also mean risking competition from Europe’s elite clubs, many of whom are expected to move quickly when Guehi’s contract expires and he becomes available on a free transfer.

The defender himself is understood to be in no rush. Remaining at Palace until the end of the season would allow him to continue playing regularly, maintain his England place and assess the best sporting and financial offer available in the summer.

Palace, meanwhile, face a delicate balancing act: cashing in now or keeping their captain for a push in domestic competitions, knowing they could lose him for nothing months later.
