What furious Nicolas Otamendi said to Rodri moments after Spain’s triumph

Manchester City‘s fingerprints were all over the biggest football match of the year — and not just because of who lifted the trophy. 

When Spain edged Argentina 1-0 after extra time to win the 2026 World Cup at the MetLife Stadium, three men with deep ties to the Etihad were at the centre of the drama, both on the pitch and in the tunnel afterwards.

Rodri, City’s talismanic midfielder, was named the tournament’s outstanding player, while his former teammate Aymeric Laporte was part of the Spain backline that ground Argentina down.

But it was Rodri’s old City colleague, Nicolas Otamendi, who provided the night’s most explosive moment, confronting his former teammate in a heated exchange once the final whistle had blown.

A golden ball, and a furious confrontation

Argentina’s dream of retaining the World Cup they won in Qatar four years ago fell apart in New Jersey.

Lionel Scaloni’s side, missing a shot in normal time, were reduced to ten men when Enzo Fernández picked up a second yellow card.

Spain eventually broke the deadlock deep into extra time through substitute Ferran Torres, who fired home in the 106th minute to settle a bruising, bad-tempered final.

The whistle brought no calm. Nahuel Molina clashed physically with Rodri, Leandro Paredes appeared to throw punches towards the Spain bench, and in a separate flashpoint, Otamendi squared up to Rodri.

He accused him and Laporte of complaining about refereeing standards throughout the tournament — and suggesting that campaign had tilted decisions Spain’s way when it mattered most.

By most accounts, Rodri looked genuinely bewildered the accusation as he peeled away to join his celebrating teammates.

According to Spanish outlet Marca, Otamendi’s message was blunt, telling his former City teammate to “start talking less”

Laporte’s comments sparked the row

The root of Otamendi’s anger appears to trace back to remarks Laporte made in the build-up to the final, when he told Marca he had been surprised some of the refereeing calls that had gone in Argentina’s favour during the tournament.

The centre-back suggested Argentina were a side prone to needling opponents through niggling challenges, and argued referees needed to stay firmly on top of games to stop them boiling over.

The comments clearly did not go unnoticed in the Argentina camp.

Whether or not Rodri had even seen those remarks, he found himself carrying the blame in the immediate aftermath of the biggest win of his career.

It made for an odd footnote to what should have been a night of unqualified triumph for City’s World Cup winners.

For Rodri, the sting of the confrontation will barely register next to what he actually achieved.

The 30-year-old was voted the tournament’s best player, adding the World Cup and the Golden Ball to a Euro 2024 winner’s medal collected just two years ago.

He completed a remarkable run of major honours to go alongside his club silverware in Manchester.
