Two of Europe’s heavyweights are preparing to battle for the signature of Manchester City forward Omar Marmoush, with both FC Barcelona and Tottenham Hotspur understood to be keen on securing the Egypt international this summer.
Interest in the 27-year-old is not entirely new. During the January transfer window, Spurs were reported to be monitoring Marmoush’s situation closely and were prepared to make a move had he become available.
However, City were in no mood to sanction a mid-season departure and opted to retain the forward as part of Pep Guardiola’s attacking options.
While Tottenham’s admiration remains, the landscape appears to have shifted. According to Sport, Barcelona have now entered the race and are positioning themselves strongly ahead of the summer market.
The report suggests the Catalan side are already “laying the groundwork” for what they hope will be a transformative rebuild at the end of the campaign, with Marmoush identified as a “serious attacking target”.
Barcelona’s recruitment team reportedly view the City forward as an ideal stylistic fit for head coach Hansi Flick. His direct running, ability to operate across the frontline and sharp movement in and around the penalty area are said to align seamlessly with Flick’s preference for fluid, high-tempo attacking football.
The Spanish outlet further indicates that Barca believe a deal could be struck for a fee below €75m (£65.8m). That valuation is described as “manageable” by the La Liga club, particularly in light of the escalating transfer fees currently attached to top-level forwards across Europe.
For Tottenham, Barcelona’s arrival in the contest significantly complicates matters. Spurs may have hoped that early interest would give them an advantage once the window reopens, but competing with a club of Barcelona’s stature – even amid their financial balancing act – presents a different level of challenge.
City’s stance and Marmoush’s growing influence
Manchester City invested heavily to secure Marmoush’s services, paying £59m to sign him from Eintracht Frankfurt in January last year. Since arriving in England, he has steadily grown into his role within Guardiola’s squad.
In 49 appearances across all competitions, Marmoush has registered 12 goals and five assists, demonstrating both his finishing ability and creative contribution.

Though not always the headline act in a star-studded City side, his versatility has proven valuable. Capable of playing centrally or drifting into wider areas, he offers tactical flexibility that Guardiola often demands from his forwards.
City’s decision to resist Tottenham’s approach in January underlined their appreciation of his importance. With domestic and European ambitions to juggle, Guardiola was unwilling to weaken his attacking depth midway through the season.
Whether that position softens in the summer remains to be seen. Much could depend on City’s broader transfer strategy and any incoming reinforcements.
Financially, an offer approaching the mooted €75m mark would represent a notable profit on their initial outlay, but City are rarely pressured sellers, particularly when dealing with players in their prime.
