Sergio Aguero tells Man City to sign ‘World-Class’ Barcelona star who will fit their system

Former Sergio Agüero has urged Manchester City to consider a move for Raphinha, describing the Brazilian as a player who would “fit perfectly” into Pep Guardiola’s tactical framework.

Agüero, City’s record goalscorer and a five-time Premier League champion during his glittering spell at the Etihad Stadium, believes the current Barcelona winger possesses the qualities required to thrive in one of Europe’s most demanding systems.

For more than a decade, Manchester City’s recruitment model has revolved around meticulous profiling — blending tactical suitability, data analysis and positional awareness.

That approach, shaped initially under former sporting director Txiki Begiristain and now overseen by successor Hugo Viana, has been central to sustaining domestic dominance.

Under Pep Guardiola, wide players are tasked with responsibilities that stretch far beyond traditional wing play. It is no longer simply about beating a full-back on the outside.

City’s wingers must press aggressively, block passing lanes between centre-halves and full-backs, and drift into central pockets when the tactical picture demands it.

It is within that demanding context that Agüero’s view resonates. Few understand Guardiola’s blueprint better than the Argentine, whose instinctive movement and relentless work rate were pivotal during one of the most successful periods in the club’s history.

Speaking to Brazilian outlet Trivela, in comments translated and relayed by Sport Witness, Agüero was asked to name a Brazilian footballer capable of flourishing at City.

“I have not been following Brazilian football closely enough to name someone from there. Among those already in Europe, I really like Raphinha. He is a player who would fit perfectly into [Manchester] City’s style of play,” he said.

The choice is telling. Rather than opting for flair alone, Agüero pointed towards a player whose tactical intelligence and work ethic mirror the demands of Guardiola’s system.

Why Raphinha suits Guardiola’s structure

Raphinha’s rise in European football has been marked by adaptability and intensity. After impressing in the Premier League with Leeds United between 2020 and 2022, he earned a move to Barcelona, where he has grown into a central attacking figure.

At Leeds, he adjusted swiftly to the tempo and physical demands of English football. In Spain, he has refined his positional awareness and decision-making, adding consistency in front of goal.

This season alone, he has scored 13 times and contributed five assists in 24 appearances, underlining his influence in the final third.

Yet statistics alone do not define his suitability for City.

Guardiola places enormous emphasis on coordinated pressing. When possession is lost, his wide players are often the first trigger in regaining control — harrying defenders, narrowing angles and preventing clean progression through the thirds.

Raphinha’s willingness to track back and engage defensively has become a defining feature of his game.

Barcelona’s collective press has, at times, appeared less cohesive when he has been absent, highlighting the Brazilian’s importance not only in attack but also in maintaining structural balance.

His energy without the ball aligns closely with Guardiola’s philosophy of suffocating opponents through organisation and intensity.
