Marc Guehi reveals next club between Man City and Liverpool, confirms when he’ll leave Palace

Marc Guehi’s future has become one of the most closely followed stories of the transfer window, with several of Europe’s biggest clubs circling the Crystal Palace captain.

Liverpool and Manchester City have emerged as the leading contenders, while Arsenal and Bayern Munich are also monitoring developments.

With his contract entering its final phase, the England international now finds himself at the centre of a high-stakes race that could shape the plans of multiple title challengers.

Liverpool’s interest in Guehi is long-standing and well established. The Merseyside club have been assessing centre-back options for some time, and the Palace defender has consistently ranked at the top of their shortlist.

Their intent was clear last summer, when an approach was made but ultimately failed to secure a deal. At that point, Guehi was open to a move to Anfield, but Palace stood firm and retained their skipper.

That decision has left the south London club in a delicate position. Guehi’s contract is due to expire at the end of the season, a timeline that significantly weakens Palace’s negotiating hand.

Liverpool are understood to be prepared to wait until the summer and attempt to sign him on a free transfer, a strategy that would represent a major coup for a player entering his prime years.

Manchester City, however, have complicated that plan. The Sky Blues are exploring the possibility of making a move before the current window closes, hoping to capitalise on Palace’s need to avoid losing a key player for nothing.

City’s recruitment team are known for their patience and precision, and reports suggest they are willing to delay a formal bid until later in the month, believing that timing could be crucial in persuading Palace to negotiate.

This approach mirrors previous City deals, where late-window pressure has led to breakthroughs.

Palace, meanwhile, must weigh the financial realities of a January sale against the sporting risk of losing their captain midway through the campaign. Despite the rumours about Marc Guehi’s future, his importance to the team is unquestioned, both as a defender and as a leader, making any decision especially complex.

Adding further intrigue is the number of clubs involved. Alongside Liverpool and City, Arsenal have been linked with a move, while Bayern Munich are also reported to be keeping a close eye on the situation.

For Guehi, the choice is not simply about finances, but about project, role and long-term ambition.

There is a growing belief that Guehi himself favours a move that aligns with Liverpool’s vision, and that patience may ultimately be rewarded.

Manchester City’s interest adds another layer, but it is Liverpool who appear to have done the most groundwork over the past year.

Insight into Guehi’s thinking came from journalist Sam Lee, speaking about information he had received from sources close to the situation.

He indicated that the defender is not only relaxed about the timing of any move, but also selective about his preferred destination.

“On Monday night, I was told by somebody who knows what’s going on at City, but also I think probably Palace as well, he said he thinks Guehi wants to stay until the summer and he prefers Liverpool [to City] in any case.

“Somebody else messaged me on Twitter (X) and I know he’s very good on other club stuff, he was like; ‘Yeah, he wants to stay until the summer – and he prefers Liverpool and Arsenal’. I was like; ‘Well I haven’t heard Arsenal’, but that kind of tallies what I’d been told the night before.”

Those comments suggest a clear hierarchy in Marc Guehi’s future decision.. While Manchester City offer the immediate allure of serial titles and a proven winning environment, Liverpool appear to represent a more appealing sporting challenge for the defender at this stage of his career.

The opportunity for a central role, regular minutes and leadership responsibilities may be decisive factors.

For Palace, the message is equally significant. If Guehi is determined to see out the season, their leverage in January is limited. Any bid from City would need to be substantial enough to offset both the sporting loss and the player’s own preference to wait.

That calculation becomes more difficult as the window edges closer to its conclusion.
