Manchester City in talks to sign Barcelona defender in January – report

Manchester City are interested in Alejandro Balde, according to report, which revealed that the Sky Blues are exploring the possibility of signing the full-back in the upcoming January transfer window. It added that manager Pep Guardiola is personally involved in the discussions.

The move, if completed, could mark a significant reunion of sorts between Guardiola and his former club, where he rose through the ranks as both a player and later as a highly successful manager.

Guardiola, who spent 15 years at Camp Nou across two spells, has rarely looked to his old club for reinforcements since taking charge at the Etihad Stadium.

Yet, according to reports from Catalonia, that may soon change. TEAMtalk, citing E-Noticies, reports that Guardiola has opened direct communication lines with Barcelona’s sporting director, Deco, in an effort to bring Balde to Manchester.

Despite Manchester City’s heavy summer spending – around £180 million in total – left-back remains an area that could use further strengthening.

The reigning Sky Blues secured the signing of Algerian defender Rayan Aït-Nouri from Wolverhampton Wanderers in the summer, but an ankle injury has sidelined him since early September. This absence has left City short of options on the left flank, with young Nico O’Reilly filling in as a makeshift replacement.

The club’s tactical setup has also seen Josko Gvardiol move into a more central role this season, creating a clear opening for another natural left-back to join the squad.

Balde, who has emerged as one of the most promising full-backs in European football, fits the profile perfectly.

Guardiola eyes Barcelona talent to bolster defence

Alejandro Balde’s rise through Barcelona’s famed La Masia academy has been swift and impressive. Known for his blistering pace, attacking instincts, and overlapping runs, the 22-year-old has become a key component of Barcelona’s left flank.

His combination play with wingers like Raphinha has been instrumental in allowing the Brazilian to drift inside, particularly under the tactical guidance of current manager Hansi Flick.

However, injuries have somewhat hindered his consistency. Balde missed a significant portion of this season after sustaining a hamstring injury in early September, and his recurring fitness issues have occasionally forced Barcelona to rotate in his absence.

Despite his undeniable talent, those concerns may influence Barcelona’s decision should a substantial offer arrive.

Guardiola is believed to be a long-time admirer of Balde’s abilities. Reports suggest he personally contacted Deco to discuss the possibility of a January transfer.

While the conversation was described as “complex,” it highlights the seriousness of City’s interest. Barcelona, still managing financial constraints and salary limitations, may be open to negotiations if the price is right.

Transfermarkt currently values Balde at around €60 million, a figure Manchester City could comfortably meet if they deem him a priority signing.

For Guardiola, the acquisition would provide much-needed depth and flexibility, especially with City competing on multiple fronts – the Premier League, Champions League, and domestic cups.

It is not the first time City have shown interest in Balde. Previous enquiries were made, but Barcelona were reluctant to part ways with one of their brightest young stars.

Circumstances may now be different, as both clubs face new realities: City’s defensive rotation is stretched thin, while Barcelona continue to balance squad depth with financial recovery.

A move to Manchester could also benefit Balde in sporting terms. Under Guardiola, he would be joining a system that emphasizes technical precision and tactical discipline – traits that align well with the player’s natural attributes.

City’s dynamic playing style could further refine Balde’s decision-making and positioning, helping him mature into one of Europe’s most complete full-backs.

A potential move in January could be difficult

The report that Manchester City are interested in Alejandro Balde in January adds another layer of intrigue to the upcoming transfer window.

However, the move will not be straightforward. With Barcelona’s current focus on rebuilding under Flick and their determination to compete in both La Liga and Europe, losing Balde mid-season would be a major blow.

Negotiations are likely to be delicate, particularly as Barcelona weigh the benefits of cashing in against the sporting loss of a homegrown talent.

Balde’s current deal runs until 2028, meaning Barcelona hold the stronger position in any potential transfer. But should the player express a desire to test himself in the Premier League, that could shift the balance.

Manchester City’s reputation for nurturing young talents under Guardiola could also appeal to Balde, who may see the move as a chance to develop further at the highest level.
