Man City take urgent action to stop superstar and fan-favourite from leaving

Manchester City are reportedly planning to stop one of their talented players from leaving the club under any circumstances in the summer.

According to the report, Jeremy Doku is expected to sit down with club officials this summer to discuss his future, as the Belgium winger looks for greater clarity over his place in the squad amid reported attention from clubs in Spain.

The 23-year-old remains an important figure under Pep Guardiola, but questions have emerged about how central his role will be going forward. Despite showing flashes of brilliance since arriving from Stade Rennais FC in 2023 for a reported £55.5m, he has not always been guaranteed a starting position.

Doku has built a reputation for his electric pace and direct dribbling, qualities that have made him a dangerous option in wide areas. However, competition for places in City’s attacking line has meant that regular starts have not always been forthcoming.

Across all competitions, he has still made a meaningful impact, contributing 17 goals and 32 assists in 116 appearances. Those numbers underline his effectiveness, even within a system where rotation is frequent and opportunities must often be seized quickly.

Reports indicate that discussions are planned for the summer, with both player and club keen to address not just contractual matters but also his longer-term role. While his current deal runs until 2028, the focus is expected to go beyond the length of his stay.

Focus on role within Guardiola’s system

At City, attacking players are required to adapt to a fluid and highly tactical approach, something that has benefited some individuals while leaving others fighting for consistency in selection. For Doku, that environment has offered both opportunity and challenge.

Guardiola is understood to value the winger’s unique qualities, particularly his ability to beat defenders in one-on-one situations and stretch opposition defences with pace.

Yet the competition for places means that no position is ever fully secure, and even high-performing players can find themselves rotated.

It is within this context that Doku is said to be seeking clarity. The report suggests the Belgian international wants a clearer understanding of how he fits into the club’s long-term plans, particularly as he enters a key stage of his career.

Interest from La Liga adds to decision-making

Interest from clubs in Spain has added another dimension to the situation, although no specific teams have been confirmed. The appeal of La Liga, known for its technical style of play, could present an attractive alternative for a player of Doku’s profile.

For now, however, the focus remains on talks with City. The club are not under immediate pressure to make a decision given the length of his contract, but the player’s desire for clarity may shape how discussions unfold.

Any outcome is likely to depend on whether both sides can reach a shared understanding of his role moving forward.

City’s squad depth and tactical flexibility have been key to their success, but they can also create uncertainty for individuals seeking regular starts.
