Man City reveal new plan after player’s exit sparks fan outrage

Manchester City have revealed their plan regarding the future of one of their star players, particularly as many fans are not happy with the speculations that he could join another club this summer.

Senior figures at the club are maintaining a clear position regarding Rodri, with the club eager to secure the midfielder’s long-term future even as speculation intensifies around interest from Real Madrid.

The Spain international, now 29, has once again become a central figure in transfer discussions while away on national duty with Spain national football team.

As preparations continue for the upcoming global tournament, questions surrounding his club future have followed him into camp.

Rodri’s importance to City’s recent success cannot be overstated. Since arriving from Atletico Madrid, he has developed into one of the most influential midfielders in European football, anchoring the side with composure, intelligence, and tactical discipline.

His ability to control tempo and shield the defence has made him indispensable under Pep Guardiola.

Yet, as has often been the case in recent years, the lure of Madrid has resurfaced.

Reports in Spain have suggested admiration from the La Liga giants, fuelling questions about whether the midfielder could be tempted by a return to his home country, this time to wear the white shirt of one of the world’s most decorated clubs.

Rodri did little to dismiss the speculation when asked directly about such a possibility. Instead, he offered a measured response that acknowledged the reality of elite football.

“There are more players who have taken that path. Not directly, but over time. You can’t turn down the best clubs in the world,” he said.

The comments have inevitably been interpreted in different ways. For some, they represent a pragmatic acknowledgement of Madrid’s stature; for others, they hint at a player keeping his options open as he approaches a critical stage in his career.

What is clear, however, is that Rodri remains under contract at the Etihad Stadium — albeit with time on that agreement beginning to run down.

“I have one year remaining on my contract,” Rodri continued. “There will be a point when we will have to sit down and talk and have a dialogue.”

City’s contract priority and transfer stance

Despite the external noise, City’s internal stance appears consistent. The Cityzens are keen to open discussions over a renewal and are understood to prioritise keeping Rodri as a cornerstone of their midfield for years to come.

From the club’s perspective, retaining a player of his calibre is not simply about maintaining quality on the pitch. It is also about preserving continuity in a system that relies heavily on positional discipline and technical excellence — traits Rodri embodies.

However, the situation is not without complexity. Should the midfielder express a firm desire to pursue a new challenge, City are not expected to block his path entirely.

Such an approach would align with the club’s broader philosophy of avoiding prolonged disputes with players who wish to leave.

Even so, any potential departure would not come cheaply. City would likely demand a substantial fee, reflecting Rodri’s standing among the world’s elite in his position, regardless of his contract entering its final year.

The coming months are therefore expected to prove decisive. Negotiations over a new contract could reshape the narrative entirely, reaffirming Rodri’s commitment to City and ending speculation — at least in the short term.

Alternatively, a lack of progress may invite further interest and intensify the spotlight on his future.
