James Trafford’s future finally decided — Man City insider reveals his secret plan

James Trafford is expected to leave Manchester City when the transfer window reopens this summer, according to reports, with the goalkeeper’s desire for regular football shaping what appears to be an inevitable departure.

The 23-year-old has found his future at the Etihad Stadium under increasing scrutiny over the course of the current season.

Having started the campaign with hopes of establishing himself as the club’s first-choice goalkeeper, Trafford’s position was significantly altered following the arrival of Gianluigi Donnarumma from Paris Saint-Germain on deadline day last summer.

Trafford himself has acknowledged uncertainty surrounding his long-term role at City, particularly after losing his place in the starting line-up.

The England international had returned to the club from Burnley in July 2025 for a reported £27 million fee, with the expectation that he would compete for the number one shirt.

However, circumstances quickly shifted following Donnarumma’s signing, limiting Trafford’s opportunities largely to domestic cup competitions.

Despite the reduced game time, Trafford has delivered notable performances when called upon.

His display in the Carabao Cup final victory over Arsenal at Wembley drew praise, underlining his ability to perform on major occasions.

Yet such moments have not been enough to dislodge Donnarumma, who has remained firmly established as the club’s first-choice goalkeeper in the Premier League.

Limited opportunities despite high praise

Throughout the season, City manager Pep Guardiola has consistently spoken highly of Trafford, describing him as an “unbelievable keeper” with an “incredible future”.

Guardiola has also made public appeals for the young goalkeeper to remain at the club, emphasising his long-term potential within the squad.

However, the reality of Trafford’s situation has proved difficult to ignore. With Donnarumma entrenched as the undisputed number one, opportunities for consistent first-team football have been scarce.

Trafford’s appearances have largely been confined to cup fixtures, despite his evident quality and development.

Reports indicate that both the player and the club have come to terms with the likelihood of a separation.

According to information from journalist Simon Bajkowski, City are prepared to allow Trafford to leave, recognising that his ambitions for regular playing time cannot be fulfilled under the current circumstances.

Trafford publicly expressed frustration over his lack of minutes earlier in the year, following City’s FA Cup victory against Salford City in January.

That moment appeared to signal a turning point, reinforcing the idea that a move away from the Etihad could be the best solution for all parties involved.

As the summer window approaches, Manchester City are not expected to obstruct Trafford’s departure.

Instead, the club are likely to seek a transfer fee that reflects his reputation and ability, with many considering him among the strongest backup goalkeepers in the Premier League.

With his reputation enhanced by strong performances in key matches and his potential widely recognised, Trafford is expected to be a sought-after figure in the upcoming transfer window.

His next move will likely offer the regular playing time that has eluded him this season, marking the next chapter in a career that continues to promise significant growth.
