Guardiola targets ‘extraordinary’ Premier League superstar to replace Jack Grealish

Manchester City are interested in Antoine Semenyo, joining Liverpool and Tottenham Hotspur in a developing three-way contest for one of the Premier League’s most dynamic attackers.

The 25-year-old, who signed fresh terms with Bournemouth during the summer, is now at the centre of mounting transfer speculation ahead of the January window, with several leading clubs preparing to test the Cherries’ determination to keep him.

According to Sky Sports, Liverpool, Spurs and Manchester City are interested in Antoine Semenyo “ahead of the January transfer window”, with both Pep Guardiola and Liverpool’s recruitment team said to be assessing options to reinforce their forward lines.

Tottenham, meanwhile, are believed to be searching specifically for a left-sided attacker and regard Semenyo as an ideal fit for Ange Postecoglou’s system.

Manchester United had previously explored a move for the Ghana international earlier in the year before opting to strengthen with Matheus Cunha and Bryan Mbeumo instead.

Their decision has effectively left the field clear for City, Liverpool and Spurs as the principal contenders for Semenyo’s signature.

Despite signing a new contract, the player is understood to be fully aware of the growing attention around him and is willing to consider a major move should Bournemouth receive an acceptable bid.

Sky Sports also report that Semenyo is “annoyed” about claims he has “asked to leave” the south-coast side, insisting he remains committed to the club while still open to the possibility of progression in his career.

Bournemouth are expected to hold firm in their valuation, with the club likely to demand around £75 million (€85m / $99m) for a player who has emerged as one of the league’s standout performers this season.

Interest from multiple Premier League giants comes at a time when Semenyo’s profile has risen further thanks to consistent displays marked by direct running, physicality and improving end product.

That rise was underlined on November 2 when Manchester City met Bournemouth, with Guardiola offering unusually effusive praise for the forward even before kick-off.

“He’s very good, absolutely. He’s an extraordinary player,” the City manager said. “He’s improving every game. Players like him make this league special – always hungry, always brave.”

Those comments have only intensified speculation that Manchester City are interested in Antoine Semenyo and may be preparing a formal approach.

Meanwhile, City’s move for the winger comes at an intriguing moment for Guardiola’s squad.

Jeremy Doku delivered his most electrifying performance in a City shirt during the recent meeting with Liverpool, raising questions about whether Guardiola truly requires another left-sided attacker in January.

The Belgian’s display showcased the qualities that persuaded the Sky Blues to sign him, and many within the club see him as a long-term solution on the flank.

For that reason, any attempt to bring Semenyo to the Etihad may hinge on positional flexibility rather than a direct like-for-like replacement.

Semenyo’s ability to operate on either wing—and occasionally through the middle—makes him a versatile option capable of adapting to Guardiola’s rotational demands.

City’s recruitment team have reportedly analysed his output and view him as a more explosive goal threat than Savinho, whose four goals in 61 appearances have led to questions about his long-term suitability at the club.

But replacing Savinho would represent an unexpected twist. City rewarded the Brazilian with a new long-term contract in October after keeping him out of Tottenham’s reach.

Allowing him to be overtaken by another winger just months later would mark a surprising shift in strategy and raise discussions about whether the club’s forward planning is undergoing a rapid recalibration.

Semenyo’s strong ball-carrying ability, impressive work rate and capacity to disrupt defensive structures could make him a valuable asset during the second half of the season.
