Erling Haaland could quit Manchester City in the future – Stefan Borson says, gives reasons

Erling Haaland to join Real Madrid speculation has dominated the media in recent weeks following his blistering start to the new campaign. There is a fresh report that Real Madrid have made contact with the striker’s representatives.

The Norwegian forward, who has continued his prolific form for both club and country, is once again at the centre of transfer speculation — a familiar position for one of world football’s most sought-after players.

The 25-year-old has been in remarkable form this season, scoring 12 goals in nine appearances under Pep Guardiola. His exploits have placed him firmly in the running for the European Golden Boot and underscored his status as one of the most lethal finishers in world football.

Haaland’s dominance has not been confined to domestic action alone. Over the weekend, he netted a hat-trick for Norway in their emphatic 5-0 victory over Israel on Saturday, 11 October. The performance further showcased his confidence and consistency in front of goal — qualities that have made him indispensable to both club and country.

But as has often been the case since his emergence at Borussia Dortmund, success brings attention. Reports from CaughtOffside claimed that Real Madrid have been in touch with Haaland’s camp to explore the possibility of a future transfer to the Santiago Bernabeu. The Spanish giants, long known for pursuing global stars, are believed to be monitoring the striker’s situation closely.

Haaland signed a new contract with Manchester City earlier this year, extending his stay until 2034. However, despite the lengthy deal, rumours persist that the Norwegian may eventually look for a new challenge abroad.

“Nothing’s impossible” – Borson weighs in on Madrid links

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, former Manchester City financial adviser Stefan Borson offered a realistic yet measured perspective on the situation. While acknowledging that football’s landscape can shift quickly, he expressed doubt over Real Madrid’s current ability to afford a move for the prolific forward.

“First of all, nothing’s impossible,” Borson said. “But I think as we understand it, some of the exit clauses and release clauses that were in the original contracts have been taken out in the renewal. It doesn’t seem to me to be likely that Real Madrid are going to be able to find the necessary fee that it would take to take Erling Haaland to Spain. Likewise, with some of the rumours about Barcelona.”

Borson did, however, leave room for future developments, noting that circumstances at major clubs can evolve dramatically over time. “But things can change, and Barcelona at some point in the next five to ten years will find themselves on a more stable financial footing, so they may well want a headline signing,” he added.

Haaland’s current form only adds to his value and allure. Before the international break, he scored the decisive goal in City’s 1-0 victory over Brentford — a strike that underlined both his precision and importance to Guardiola’s system. Many pundits now believe Haaland is operating at the peak of his powers, combining physical dominance with sharper movement and composure.

Having joined City from Borussia Dortmund in 2022 after the Sky Blues triggered his £51 million release clause, Haaland wasted no time making history in England. His goals have helped deliver domestic and continental success, including treble season, which cemented his status as one of the defining players of his generation.

Still, as Borson pointed out, it’s not unthinkable that Haaland might one day seek a new challenge. The financial expert believes the striker could eventually be tempted to test himself in another league — but insists that such a move is not on the immediate horizon.

“I think he’s got some time to go at City, but I wouldn’t rule out the possibility that Haaland doesn’t see out his entire contract at City,” Borson said. “I would think after a certain number of years he probably will want to try something new, but I don’t believe there’s a list or a process and anything’s imminent. It seems to me to just be paper talk.”

That sentiment reflects the wider consensus around the Etihad — that despite growing speculation, Haaland remains committed to City and focused on maintaining his extraordinary output. Guardiola’s side continues to rely heavily on his goals, presence, and competitive edge, all of which make him central to their long-term ambitions.

For Real Madrid, who already have Kylian Mbappé at the club, the prospect of pairing the two modern greats remains enticing but financially challenging. While Madrid have a history of securing blockbuster transfers, Borson’s comments highlight the practical difficulties of prising Haaland away from a club that views him as untouchable.

As things stand, Erling Haaland to join Real Madrid remains a rumour and there are no concrete signs that the striker is pushing for a move, nor that Manchester City are open to any negotiations. The Cityzens are under no pressure to sell, and with Haaland tied down for nearly a decade, City hold all the leverage in any potential future talks.
