Uncertainty continues to surround the future of Rodri at Manchester City, with new insight suggesting the midfielder could be approaching a natural point of departure after years of success in England.
The Spain international, widely regarded as one of the most influential players in Pep Guardiola’s system, is entering the final stretch of his current deal, which is set to expire next year.
Recent speculation has linked him with a potential return to Spain, particularly with Real Madrid, although the player himself has played down suggestions that he is actively pushing for a move.
Rodri had previously been associated with comments hinting at a desire to leave the Etihad Stadium, but he later criticised the clip that circulated, arguing it had been heavily edited and misrepresented his actual position.
That response has only added to the uncertainty, rather than fully closing the door on transfer rumours.
Despite the ambiguity, former City financial adviser Stefan Borson believes the situation is part of a predictable cycle in elite football, particularly for a player approaching a milestone age and having already achieved major honours.
A natural turning point in Rodri’s career
Borson has suggested that Rodri’s situation is not unusual, pointing to a combination of age, physical demands, and career achievements as key factors behind the growing speculation.
Speaking about the midfielder’s future, Borson to Football Insider: “This summer, a lot will depend on whether Real Madrid are prepared to pay let’s say £50 million, which I think is probably the level City would entertain.
“I think it’s inevitable, partly because he’s 30 [in June], so the reality is that the best that City could expect is a one-year extension perhaps.”
The financial expert’s remarks underline a broader reality in modern football, where players nearing 30 often begin to reassess their long-term plans.
For Rodri, who has been central to City’s dominance in the Premier League, the physical intensity of English football may also play a role.
“I don’t think it’s a major shock that he’s ready to return to Spain, especially after the injury and the intensity of the Premier League and the fact he’s won everything,” Borson continued.
That final point is particularly significant. Rodri has been instrumental in City’s success over recent seasons, playing a decisive role in their domestic and European triumphs.

Having secured multiple league titles and individual recognition, including the prestigious Ballon d’Or, there is a growing sense that he may be approaching the final chapter of his time in England.
Borson added: “He’s 30 years old. With Rodri it doesn’t usually feel like he is 30 for some reason, but I think this is just a natural sort of time for him to consider his position.”
City face a key decision before the summer
For Manchester City, the situation presents a clear dilemma. With Rodri’s contract running down, the club must decide whether to secure his future quickly or risk losing one of their most valuable assets for nothing.
Reports suggest City are keen to extend his deal, but time is a critical factor. Entering the final year of a contract significantly weakens a club’s negotiating position, particularly when interest from a European giant like Real Madrid is involved.
Borson highlighted the financial implications of the decision, noting that City could command a significant fee if they choose to sell.
The club’s options are therefore limited but clear: secure a contract extension before the transfer window opens or sanction a sale while his market value remains high.
