Pep Guardiola confirms fresh injury blow ahead of Manchester Derby

Manchester City’s team news for the Carabao Cup semi-final first leg against Newcastle United raised immediate questions, with Nico Gonzalez absent from the travelling squad.

In a season already shaped by disruption and rotation, his omission stood out. The midfielder has been one of the quieter success stories of City’s campaign, growing into a reliable option in the centre of the pitch, and his unavailability adds another layer of concern for Pep Guardiola as the fixtures continue to stack up.

Gonzalez’s absence is not a matter of selection or tactics. Instead, it is the latest example of how fine the margins can be at the top level, where one awkward challenge can undo weeks of careful management.

Knock against Brighton proves costly

Gonzalez’s problems can be traced back to last week’s Premier League meeting with Brighton. Having only recently returned from a separate injury picked up against Sunderland, the 24-year-old was eager to re-establish himself.

He was named in the starting line-up and initially appeared to be moving freely, but the match took a turn when he suffered what Guardiola later described as an “incredible knock”.

Although Gonzalez tried to continue, the impact clearly affected him. He lasted just over an hour before being replaced by Rodri, a change that hinted at concern rather than simple fatigue.

City’s medical staff monitored his recovery closely in the days that followed, hoping rest and treatment would be enough to avoid further complications.

That optimism briefly extended to the FA Cup. Gonzalez was named on the bench, suggesting that he was close to full fitness.

However, he did not make an appearance, and Guardiola later revealed that the midfielder “didn’t recover well” from the blow.

By the time preparations began for the trip to Newcastle, it became clear that asking him to travel would risk making the situation worse.

Guardiola confirmed the decision before the semi-final, offering a typically direct assessment of the situation.

“He’s injured. He didn’t recover well, he made an effort but it’s a step back,” said Guardiola, speaking before the game.

Exactly how long Gonzalez’s absence will take remains uncertain. City have not placed a firm timeframe on his return, and Guardiola is expected to provide further clarity in his pre-match press conference ahead of the weekend Manchester Derby.

The frustration for both player and club is understandable. Gonzalez had started to establish rhythm after his earlier setback, and his recent performances highlighted his growing importance within Guardiola’s system.

His absence forces City to adjust once more, leaning heavily on those who remain fit in the engine room.

Injury list grows as City look ahead

Gonzalez’s absence does not exist in isolation. Instead, it adds his name to a steadily growing injury list that has already tested City’s depth this season.

Ruben Dias, Josko Gvardiol, Savinho, Mateo Kovacic, John Stones and Oscar Bobb are all currently unavailable, leaving Guardiola with limited room for manoeuvre in several positions.

In midfield, Gonzalez had provided balance and energy, helping to link defence and attack while allowing others more freedom further forward.

Losing him places additional responsibility on players like Rodri, who continues to be a central figure in almost every competition City contest.

The challenge for Guardiola is not simply replacing Gonzalez for one match, but managing workloads across a demanding run of fixtures.

There was, however, a boost in the build-up to the Newcastle game. Rayan Ait-Nouri returned swiftly after Algeria’s exit from the Africa Cup of Nations and was included straight into the squad.

Travel complications threatened to delay his return, with a cancelled flight back to Manchester, but the defender was able to join the team training on Monday.
