“Worst Ever” – Tijjani Reijnders suffers media attack after performance for country

Many Manchester City players have been called up to represent their countries during the ongoing international break.

While some withdrew from national duty due to injury concerns, others featured prominently in matches across Europe and beyond.

However, not every City star returned with glowing reviews. One of Pep Guardiola’s recent summer signings, Tijjani Reijnders, has come under heavy fire in the Dutch media after what has been described as his worst outing in national colours.

Dutch media criticize Tijjani Reijnders’ performance against Lithuania

Tijjani Reijnders has made a strong start to life in the Premier League, particularly catching the eye in Manchester City’s opening fixture of the season against Wolverhampton.

His energy, control, and passing range earned plaudits, with many fans believing he could quickly become a vital part of Guardiola’s midfield setup.

However, his form has dipped in subsequent weeks. Reijnders struggled to assert himself in City’s defeats to Tottenham Hotspur and Brighton, raising questions over his consistency at the top level.

Unfortunately for the Dutch international, that poor run of form continued during the international break.

Representing the Netherlands in their clash against Lithuania, midfielder endured what local outlets described as a “terrible performance.”

His subdued display saw him fail to influence the game in the way fans and analysts had hoped.

Despite the Netherlands securing a victory, Reijnders’ contribution was singled out for criticism.

Voetbal Primeur handed the midfielder a 5.5/10 rating, a below-par score that reflected their disappointment.

“Wasn’t particularly good against Poland and couldn’t distinguish himself in Lithuania either. Dutch national team fans haven’t seen his Manchester City form during the recent international break. That conclusion is certainly valid,” the publication noted.

Football Oranje echoed the sentiment, writing: “Probably his worst performance for the Netherlands. Barely got involved before going off after an hour.”

Such harsh reviews underline the growing concern about his ability to replicate club form on the international stage.

Can Reijnders bounce back at Manchester City?

The criticism has placed Reijnders under the spotlight at an early stage of his Manchester City career.

Having joined from AC Milan in the summer, expectations were high that he would adapt quickly to Guardiola’s high-tempo, possession-based style.

His impressive debut performance appeared to validate that belief, but his recent dip has raised doubts.

For Guardiola, the immediate priority will be helping Reijnders regain confidence ahead of a busy domestic and European schedule.
